On December 9th, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired the 25th meeting of the National Steering Committee on Combating Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. Accordingly, 100% of fishing vessels are now registered and updated in the national fisheries database VNFishbase.

According to the report at the meeting, over the past two months, the Government, the Prime Minister , along with ministries, sectors, and coastal localities, have focused intensely on implementing a month-long campaign against IUU fishing, with the goal of "resolutely declaring war on IUU fishing and determined to lift the EC's yellow card against Vietnam's fisheries by 2025."

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development stated that the management of fishing vessels and monitoring of fishing activities continues to be strictly maintained, especially for vessels that do not meet the requirements to go to sea. Currently, 100% of fishing vessels (79,360) have been registered and updated in the national fisheries database VNFishbase. The handling of violations of the law in IUU fishing has also seen many positive developments.

Speaking at the session, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested ministries, sectors, and localities to pursue a dual objective: firstly, to explain and put an end to IUU fishing as recommended by the European Commission (EC), and secondly, to restructure the fisheries sector towards sustainable, legal, and legitimate development.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need to restructure the fishing fleet and workforce towards "legal fishing," while significantly increasing aquaculture and seafood processing; promoting cooperation with neighboring countries in exploitation and processing; and gradually reducing offshore fishing activities due to high risks.

The Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of National Defence to continue maintaining patrols and controls in border waters; tighten control over fishing vessels entering and leaving ports; and strictly handle vessels that do not meet operating requirements. The Ministry of National Defence was also requested to guide ship owners and captains to fully comply with declaration procedures when entering and leaving ports and to resolutely prevent unregistered vessels or those that do not meet regulatory requirements from sailing.
