Cold winter weather makes respiratory illnesses more common, with coughing being the most prevalent symptom. Coughing can last for weeks, sometimes even half a month. Applying the following folk remedies can effectively reduce cough symptoms.

  • 1 teaspoon of rock sugar;
  • 1 teaspoon of honey (for babies over 12 months).

Making:

  • Mix the ingredients well, place them inside the pear, and steam for 15–20 minutes.
  • Strain the liquid; adults can eat both the solids and the liquid. Refrigerate and use within 3 days.

Ingredient:

  • Pure honey: 500ml.

Making:

  • Wash the papaya flowers thoroughly and let them drain (you can blanch them in boiling water for 30 seconds if you are worried about the bitter sap).
  • Place the flowers in a glass jar, pour honey over them until they are completely covered, seal the jar tightly, and store it in a cool place away from sunlight.
  • Soak for at least 10 days, ideally 2–3 weeks.

Use:

  • Take one teaspoon in the morning and one in the evening.
  • It can be mixed with warm water or sucked directly on when you have a cough or sore throat.

3. Steamed chives with kumquats and rock sugar

Ingredient:

  • Fresh chives: 100g, cut into sections;
  • Green kumquats: 7–10 fruits, cut in half, squeeze out the juice, and use only the peel (you can substitute with the peel of a bitter orange or a thin green orange peel);
  • Rock sugar: 80g;
  • Turmeric: 1/2 a root (either turmeric or red turmeric can be used), finely chopped.

Instructions: Boil the four ingredients in a double boiler for 40 minutes, then strain the liquid to extract the juice. Divide the resulting liquid into several portions and drink throughout the day. This remedy is very suitable for young children.

4. Pickled pink lemons in honey

Honey-soaked pink lemons are a traditional folk remedy that is very good for the respiratory system, helping to reduce coughs, sore throats, and boost natural immunity.

Ingredient:

  • Fresh pink lemons: 1 kg;
  • Pure honey: 1 liter;
  • Rock sugar: 0.5 kg (to taste);
  • Coarse salt: 1 tablespoon.

Making:

  • Wash the lemons thoroughly, then soak them in diluted salt water for 15 minutes.
  • Remove from the water, drain, remove the stems, and slice thinly (or leave whole).
  • Wash the glass jar thoroughly, rinse it with boiling water, and let it dry.
  • Spread a layer of rock sugar at the bottom of the jar → arrange the lemons → sprinkle with sugar → repeat until all the lemons are used. Pour honey over the lemons until they are completely covered. Seal tightly and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • It can be used after 3 weeks; the longer it sits, the more the lemon flavor infuses, giving it a milder aroma.

Some things to keep in mind when using pink lemons:

  • Pink lemons should be consumed when they are in season (August–October).
  • Do not soak in plastic or metal containers.
  • Not suitable for children under 1 year old.
  • When using, use a clean, dry spoon to prevent fermentation.

In addition, you should keep your body warm – especially your neck, head, back, and feet; and limit foods that are considered "cold" in nature, such as crab, snails, and duck meat.
