AI wasn't the main focus of the WWDC 2025 Global Developers Conference, which centered on operating system design, but new AI features will help Apple's iOS catch up with long-standing features on Samsung and Google's Android devices.
Here are some notable AI-related features announced at WWDC.
Live Translation
The Messages, Phone, and FaceTime apps will feature live translation capabilities, enabling users to chat while traveling abroad or communicating with speakers of other languages. Text messages can be automatically translated into the recipient's chosen language. During voice calls, the translation will be played aloud throughout the conversation. For video calls via FaceTime, translated subtitles will appear directly on the screen.

This feature helps Apple catch up with Google and Samsung, which have been offering similar translation functions for years.
On-Screen Content Recognition
Starting with iOS 26, Apple's Visual Intelligence feature can analyze images and text displayed on the iPhone screen, allowing users to ask ChatGPT for more information about the content they are viewing. Additionally, users can search Google for similar images or products.
This feature is very similar to Google's Circle to Search on Android. Apple says that screen recognition will be activated whenever a user takes a screenshot.

Workout Buddy
This is a feature exclusive to the Apple Watch. AI-generated voices will help users track workout milestones, progress, and fitness goals with an enthusiastic tone. Apple says this assistant is inspired by trainers on the Apple Fitness+ platform, aiming to provide motivation during workouts or runs. Workout Buddy can be activated when the Apple Watch is connected to Bluetooth headphones.

However, this feature initially only supported English and was limited to a few popular exercise types such as running, walking, outdoor cycling, high-intensity training, and traditional exercises.
Genmoji
Users can combine two emojis to create more creative expressions. Using the Image Playground tool, users can also have ChatGPT transform images into styles like oil paintings or illustrations. Editing expressions or personal characteristics when recreating images of friends and family also becomes easier.

Messages
Apple Intelligence will suggest when to create polls in group chats, and users can create custom backgrounds for their conversations.
Electronic wallet
Apple continues to expand the functionality of its Wallet app, allowing it to automatically identify and summarize order information from emails sent from retailers or shipping companies, helping users manage deliveries in a centralized location.
AI model
Developers can leverage the Apple Intelligence platform model running directly on the device to integrate AI features like voice search into their apps. These features work offline and don't incur cloud computing costs. Additionally, the upgraded Shortcuts app in iOS 26 and macOS 26 will offer "smart actions" powered by Apple Intelligence.
