IDP, one of the two IELTS test providers in Vietnam, announced that for the first time, they have recorded a candidate achieving a score of 9.0 in all skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The person who achieved this impressive result is Luyen Quang Kien, 31 years old, from Hanoi .
Kien started taking the IELTS exam in 2014 and scored 7.5 on his first attempt. In 2022, he took the IELTS exam 8 times, achieving a 9.0 overall score twice, but he never scored 9.0 in the Writing section of the exam.
In 2023, Kien achieved a 9.0 in Writing in the final exam in May, with two skills scoring 8.5. It wasn't until the exam on June 3rd that he finally achieved his perfect score, reaching the "ceiling" of 9.0 in all four skills.
Mr. Luyen Quang Kien is a former student of the Electronics Engineering department at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
Although he is an English teacher, Kien has not undergone any intensive language training. He is a former student of the Electronics Engineering department at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
With strong academic performance in Math, Physics, and Chemistry, he once thought he was "only suited for engineering fields." In university, he discovered a passion for learning foreign languages rather than his specialized subjects. He joined an English club at the end of his first year and began working as a teaching assistant at a communication center. Afterward, he decided to study for, take, and teach IELTS.
He regularly takes the IELTS exam 5-7 times a year to verify the effectiveness of his teaching and test preparation methods. " Taking the exam motivates me to further improve my language skills. When I learn new knowledge, I'm more inspired to develop my lessons. Also, despite my efforts, I had never achieved a 9.0 in Writing before. This made me doubt myself. When I found out I had achieved my long-held goal, I was so happy I cried," Kien said.
Kien's secret to improving his English is "living with the language." He created an English-speaking environment and learned the language by watching movies and entertainment programs without Vietnamese subtitles. He consistently listens for at least two hours a day, a habit he's maintained for over 10 years.
"I allocate my time proportionally to each skill: 80% for listening, 10% for reading, and the remaining 5% for speaking and 5% for writing. Of course, this ratio will change and be adjusted depending on the stage, but for me, listening is the key to learning a foreign language," he emphasized.
To achieve optimal IELTS results, Mr. Kien advises candidates to master the different skills for each section of the test. Candidates should also focus on simplicity and sophistication rather than using sophisticated vocabulary or complex structures.
He explained that the IELTS exam assesses effective English usage. Candidates should focus on understanding the context in which specific vocabulary or grammar should be used, rather than showing off advanced vocabulary and sentence structures. Many students enter the Speaking section with the mindset of impressing the examiner and force phrases they've memorized at home into their speech. This often backfires as it diminishes fluency and coherence.
"My advice has always been to let your opinion dictate the vocabulary and grammar, not the other way around. This will help test-takers feel more confident and restore the exam to its true value: testing effective language use. If you present your opinion and develop it convincingly with subtly chosen vocabulary, you will surely get a high score," he shared.
Mr. Kien also expressed that, because IELTS has quite academic topics and requires a certain amount of social knowledge to achieve a good score in all four sections, students below grade 8 are not the group that should prepare for IELTS.
"Learning IELTS has high applicability in life, work, and studies. It also helps learners have motivation and clear goals during the learning process. Foreign language certificates like IELTS also help schools and educational institutions reduce the effort in student recruitment. However, IELTS has quite academic topics that require a certain level of social knowledge, so it is usually suitable for students from grade 8 and above ," Mr. Kien concluded.
