Khuat Van Khang has a lot of competition experience. |
In just two days, the AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2025 will officially kick off. 16 teams have finalized their registration lists, bringing with them the most talented young players with the ambition of conquering the continental championship.
Among them, the Vietnam U23 team received special attention for possessing a player who has transcended the boundaries of a youth tournament: Khuất Văn Khang.
The AFC homepage, in its summary of noteworthy players in each team, selected Khuất Văn Khang as Vietnam's representative in Group A. This wasn't a biased choice, but accurately reflected the 2004-born midfielder's position within the current team structure.
At 21, Van Khang is no longer a "promising young talent" in the conventional sense. He has international experience at the national team level, accustomed to the pressure, pace, and intensity of big matches. This foundation allows Van Khang to enter the U23 Asian Championship with the mindset of a key player, rather than just a supporting option.
In the U23 Vietnam team's playing style, Van Khang is highly regarded for his all-around abilities: fierce tackling, good situational awareness, astute ball distribution, and especially his ability to maintain the team's tempo. The AFC describes him as "the heart of the team," a concise but accurate assessment, because every tactical approach by Vietnam requires stability from the midfield.
Notably, the AFC also emphasized Van Khang's composure and leadership qualities. This is a major difference compared to many players of the same age. In the context of the Vietnam U23 team aiming to replicate, or even surpass, their 2018 runner-up finish, the calmness of a player who is "beyond his years" like Van Khang carries strategic significance.
Group A of the tournament is considered a tough one, with the presence of host nation Saudi Arabia, a highly ambitious team with many players who have competed at the national team level. Jordan also brings a fast-paced attack, while Kyrgyz Republic is an unknown quantity in its first appearance at the finals.
In that context, the ability to control the midfield and maintain the team's structure will be crucial, and that is where Khuất Văn Khang can showcase his role.
For the AFC, choosing Khuat Van Khang as the face of the Vietnam U23 team is not just a recognition of his individual talent. It also sends a clear message: Vietnam is going to Saudi Arabia in 2025 not just to gain experience, but to truly compete, with a leader in the midfield as its cornerstone.
