The 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is drawing to a close, with the tournament concluding after host nation Ivory Coast plays Nigeria in the final on February 11th. However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has stated that it is still uncertain when AFCON 2025 will take place due to scheduling conflicts.

AFCON 2025, the 35th African Cup of Nations, was scheduled to be held in mid-2025 in Morocco. However, problems arose after the FIFA Club World Cup schedule was announced, with the tournament expanding to 32 clubs for the first time to take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13, 2025. Africa has four slots in FIFA's biggest club competition . The two teams already secured are the two previous continental champions, Al Ahly (Egypt) and Wydad Casablanca (Morocco). The remaining two slots will be confirmed after the African Champions League final in May.

African Football Confederation President Patrice Motsepe said on Friday that a scheduling solution for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is certain, although it is unclear where those dates fit within the FIFA-managed global calendar of national teams. The current document does not include a section for the 2025 African Cup of Nations. Motsepe added: “Yesterday I met with the FIFA President and many others. There are many competing events at the same time, but we are confident that we will determine a reasonable timeframe. We have to accommodate many other competing competitions.”

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, already postponed from mid-last year to avoid the rainy season in host nation Ivory Coast, has left European clubs disappointed as they are playing without African players. Liverpool star Mohamed Salah suffered a hamstring injury while on duty for Egypt, and other clubs like Leverkusen are contributing four players. Napoli striker Victor Osimhen hopes to lead Nigeria to the title in Sunday's final…

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is seen as Morocco's main test of its stadiums and organizational capabilities before the planet's biggest football event, the 2030 World Cup. Morocco was confirmed by FIFA this year as a co-host of the 2030 World Cup, alongside Spain and Portugal, plus three neighboring South American countries: Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay – each of which will only play one match out of the 104 scheduled games.
