Airbus unexpectedly takes the lead over Boeing.
On October 7th, the European Airbus Group marked a new commercial milestone when the A320 surpassed the American Boeing 737 to become the most delivered aircraft in history.
With the latest A320 delivered to Saudi Arabian airline Flynas, Airbus has broken Boeing's decades-long record, bringing the total number of deliveries to 12,260 since the A320 began service in 1988, according to data from UK-based consulting firm Cirium.
In total, Boeing and Airbus have delivered more than 25,000 aircraft of this narrow-body type, originally designed to serve major transit hubs and later widely used by low-cost airlines. Following the 9/11 attacks in 2001, Boeing reduced production while Airbus increased its cooperation with these low-cost carriers.
Airbus is currently the world's largest aircraft manufacturer by annual deliveries and is expanding production in the US and China. The A320 was launched in 1984 at a time when many doubted whether Airbus could survive another decade after attempting to launch two wide-body aircraft.
Three years later, the A320 made its maiden flight. At that time, Airbus engineers took a risk by introducing the first fly-by-wire system into a major commercial aircraft – a pioneering technology that had initially been opposed by unions and some airlines, but which later became widespread.
