Airbus unexpectedly takes the lead over Boeing
On October 7, Europe's Airbus Group marked a new commercial milestone when the A320 surpassed the US's Boeing 737 to become the most delivered aircraft in history.
With the latest A320 delivered to Saudi Arabian airline Flynas, Airbus broke Boeing's decades-long record, bringing total deliveries to 12,260 since the A320 entered service in 1988, according to data from UK-based consultancy Cirium.
Boeing and Airbus have collectively delivered more than 25,000 of the narrowbody aircraft, which were originally designed to serve large hubs and later became widely used by low-cost carriers. After the events of September 11, 2001, Boeing cut production while Airbus increased cooperation with these low-cost carriers.
Airbus is now the world’s largest aircraft manufacturer by annual deliveries and is expanding production in the US and China. The A320 was launched in 1984 at a time when many doubted whether Airbus could survive another decade after trying to launch two widebody aircraft.
Three years later, the A320 made its maiden flight. At that time, Airbus engineers took a risk by introducing fly-by-wire controls into a mainstay commercial aircraft for the first time—a pioneering technology that was opposed by unions and some airlines but later became commonplace.
