Ajax bitterly lost the Dutch championship

Before the final round, PSV had 76 points, 1 point more than Ajax. If they just win against Sparta Rotterdam, the club has no more goals to strive for, coach Peter Bosz and his team will successfully defend the Eredivisie title.

Away from home, PSV had some trouble because Sparta Rotterdam played with determination. In the 52nd minute, PSV fans were filled with anxiety when Zechiel equalized 1-1 for the home team. At the same time, Ajax was leading Twente 1-0.

In a difficult moment, veteran Luuk De Jong spoke up with a precise close-range finish, restoring the lead for PSV in the 58th minute. Continuing the momentum, the away team sealed a 3-1 victory with Malik Tillman's goal in the 84th minute.

This result shattered Ajax's hopes of winning the championship. After 34 rounds, PSV was crowned champion with only 1 point more than their arch-rival.

Ajax beat Twente 2-0 but it was not enough to win the championship.

Ajax can only blame themselves for running out of steam in the final stages of the season. Before round 29, Ajax was leading the table, 9 points ahead of PSV, many fans thought that the Eredivisie championship race this season was over.

However, the unthinkable happened when the home team at Johan Cruyff Arena unexpectedly stumbled consecutively, from round 30 to 33 with 2 draws and 2 losses. Disappointment peaked when in round 33, Ajax only had to face Groningen, a club that had run out of goals to strive for. Despite leading 2-1 until the 90+8 minute, plus the opponent had to play with one less player, Jordan Henderson and his teammates still let the home team Groningen equalize 2-2 in the 90+9 minute.

Blokzijl's goal cost Ajax the victory and marked a turning point in the title race. PSV came out on top and won the title in spectacular fashion.

The 2024/25 Eredivisie landscape is set to be decided as PSV and Ajax secure places in the League Phase, next season's Champions League, while Feyenoord qualify for the Champions League qualifiers. Utrecht will represent the Dutch league in the Europa League, while AZ, Twente, GA Eagles, Nijmegen and Heerenveen are in the Conference League qualifiers.
