Ajax suffered a bitter defeat in the Dutch league.

Before the final round of matches, PSV had 76 points, one point more than Ajax. A win against Sparta Rotterdam would be all the club needed to achieve, and coach Peter Bosz's team would successfully defend their Eredivisie title.

Playing away from home, PSV faced some difficulties as Sparta Rotterdam played with great determination. In the 52nd minute, PSV fans were filled with anxiety when Zechiel equalized 1-1 for the home team. At the same time, Ajax were leading Twente 1-0.

In a difficult moment, veteran Luuk De Jong stepped up with a well-timed close-range finish, restoring PSV's lead in the 58th minute. Building on this momentum, the visitors sealed the 3-1 victory with a goal from Malik Tillman in the 84th minute.

This result shattered Ajax's hopes of winning the championship. After 34 rounds, PSV were crowned champions with just one point more than their arch-rivals.

Ajax only have themselves to blame for running out of steam in the final stages of the season. Before round 29, Ajax led the table, 9 points ahead of PSV, leading many fans to believe the Eredivisie title race this season was already over.

However, the unthinkable happened when the team at the Johan Cruyff Arena unexpectedly stumbled in consecutive matches, from rounds 30 to 33, with two draws and two losses. The disappointment reached its peak in round 33 when Ajax only had to face Groningen, a club with nothing left to play for. Despite leading 2-1 until the 90+8th minute, and with their opponents playing with ten men, Jordan Henderson and his teammates still allowed Groningen to equalize 2-2 in the 90+9th minute.

Blokzijl's goal cost Ajax the victory and marked a turning point in the title race. PSV surged ahead and spectacularly won the championship.

The Eredivisie 2024/25 season was decided when PSV and Ajax secured places in the League Phase of the Champions League next season, while Feyenoord qualified for the Champions League preliminary rounds. Utrecht will represent the Dutch league in the Europa League. Meanwhile, AZ, Twente, GA Eagles, Nijmegen, and Heerenveen participated in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
