The trauma of school violence.

Báo Đại Đoàn KếtBáo Đại Đoàn Kết26/12/2024

A series of violent incidents have occurred, causing harm to the physical and mental health of students. In these cases, the children's behavior is not only the responsibility of the school but also of the family and society.

A series of incidents occurred just before Tet (Lunar New Year).

With the explosion of the internet, videos documenting school violence are now easily found online, and even stored for a long time, causing even deeper trauma not only to the victims but also to their families, friends, witnesses, and those involved in the incident. This has sparked public outrage and concern about the increasing thuggish and aggressive nature of the perpetrators. Victims in these incidents are often individuals or groups of students, subjected to physical violence or other forms of verbal or physical abuse by other groups of students.

On December 17th, a video circulated on social media showing a male student walking in the schoolyard when he was stopped by another student who repeatedly punched him in the face and kicked him in the stomach. The attack only stopped when the student collapsed to the ground. Many other students witnessed the incident, but no one intervened. The two male students involved were later identified as 10th-grade students at Thanh Hoa Industrial College.

Also circulating on social media in late December were two clips showing a group of students wearing physical education uniforms bearing the name of Phu Quoi Secondary and High School (Phu Quoi commune, Long Ho district) ganging up on two other female students wearing uniforms similar to those of Loc Hoa Secondary School (Loc Hoa commune, Long Ho district), both in Vinh Long province. The incident occurred in a secluded area; the two girls were grabbed by the hair, pulled to the ground, and repeatedly punched and kicked, only able to cover their heads and endure the attack. Many other students were present but no one intervened; one person used their phone to film the fight.

Previously, an 11th-grade female student in Thanh Son village (Trung Chinh commune, Nong Cong district, Thanh Hoa province) was beaten by a group of classmates, resulting in a fractured cervical vertebra. The medical examination concluded that the total percentage of bodily injury at the time of the examination was 23%.

On November 28th, a 10th-grade student from An Bien High School (Thu Ba town, An Bien district, Kien Giang province) was assaulted by a group of four 9th-grade students, resulting in hospitalization.

On November 11th, after the flag-raising ceremony at Nguyen Hue Secondary School (Dak Mil district, Dak Nong province), a student reported a fight between two female students to their homeroom teacher.

Alarmingly, school violence is no longer limited to older students but has now spread to elementary school. Recently, a video of a 5th-grade student at Phuoc Tan Elementary School (Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province) being beaten by a group of classmates due to a conflict was posted on Facebook. The incident occurred at a house rented by the homeroom teacher near the school where students had lunch before attending classes in the afternoon. At the time, the teacher was eating lunch outside and was unaware of what was happening. One student then took out their phone to record the incident, after which the parents discovered it and posted it on Facebook, bringing the school to the attention.

A series of bullying incidents have occurred, accompanied by a heartbreakingly familiar scene: numerous other students witness the events but do nothing to intervene; some even encourage the violence, while others film it with their phones. Beyond superficial injuries, many incidents have serious consequences, affecting the victims' long-term health. In particular, the emotional pain and distress caused by anxiety and resentment will not only last for a few days or months but can haunt them for a lifetime. Especially in cases where bullying and fighting only become apparent months later, the damage to the victims is immeasurable, and without timely and effective psychological intervention, the negative impacts will be long-lasting.

Looking at the broader picture, the consequences of school violence are not just pain and trauma for the education sector, but for society as a whole. Today, we live in a flat world where just a few clicks online can spread images of violence, not only involving strangers but also potentially our own children, friends, relatives, or even ourselves, which anyone can view, comment on, and judge. At school age, when children lack the maturity to understand right and wrong in life and the skills to interact harmoniously in relationships, the impact of these incidents is even more serious, potentially affecting a child's future if not properly and promptly intervened and prevented.

Increase resistance to school violence.

Warning about school violence, which includes physical violence, psychological violence, and technological violence… Dr. Le Thi Thanh Thuy (Vietnam Youth Academy) believes that families and schools need to equip children with coping and situational handling skills, as well as self-protection skills when violence occurs. The approach should vary depending on the severity of the violence. Most importantly, it requires the joint efforts of the entire society, especially the support and close monitoring of teachers, parents, and relevant parties.

In this regard, schools need to develop a code of conduct, implement prevention programs, and provide education to equip students with necessary skills. In particular, the principal, as the head of the institution, plays a crucial role in building a disciplined, compassionate, responsible, and innovative school environment. Recently, the principal of Trung Hieu Secondary School in Vung Liem district (Vinh Long province) was disciplined with a warning for failing to fulfill their responsibilities as principal, allowing repeated instances of school violence to occur without effective solutions or thorough handling, and lacking support and cooperation with the families involved.

Ho Chi Minh City is the first locality to develop and apply a set of criteria for happy schools. Among these criteria, some content related to school violence is considered a positive and progressive view on education. Specifically, the criteria guide that the school report card is a record of each person's entire learning journey and their journey into adulthood. Therefore, teachers should acknowledge strengths, while weaknesses and shortcomings are only a part of a student's life. When assessing shortcomings, the school needs to consider the entire monitoring process after coordinating with the family and supporting the student. Careful consideration should be given to the wording when writing comments in a student's report card. The school should maintain records related to student discipline according to regulations. Recording disciplinary actions in student report cards should be limited.

However, looking at the current reality, school violence is causing many difficulties in educating students in schools because no matter how many humane lessons teachers teach, how many beautiful words they say, when students witness brutal fights caused by their classmates or fellow students, they will certainly be seriously affected.

Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of the Office of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, stated that when incidents occur, the department's stance is to resolutely handle them thoroughly. This includes carefully considering information from multiple perspectives, examining the responsibilities of relevant management agencies and current leaders… In addition, educational work must be carried out because students at school age, with their interaction from social media and modern society, face many issues that require the education sector to prioritize building a positive school culture. Ensuring students are happy to come to school is a crucial criterion.

"

According to Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son, to eliminate school violence, the students are the ones who must do the most. If they study well, live with aspirations and ideals, know how to love, care for, and share, such people will surely not practice violence against others. If they have enough skills to solve their own problems and help their friends solve their problems, then violence will have no place in schools. If they have the skills to filter information, use social media, and express their opinions, then there will also be no place for the harmful influence of social media... Self-cultivation, love, skills, and attitudes are very important things that students need to do to push back school violence. Everyone does their job well, from principals, homeroom teachers, and psychological counselors fulfilling their responsibilities; to school culture being done well; With the law enforced… we will gradually push back against school violence and build a happy environment – which is the environment we already have.

Dr. Hoang Trung Hoc - Head of the Psychology and Education Department, Academy of Educational Management:

We need to speak out against school violence.

Dr. Hoang Trung Hoc 1

Recently, the problem of school violence has become alarming, considering the number of incidents, their dangerous nature, and the extent of their impact. The causes vary from case to case, but in some instances, victims are not experiencing bullying for the first time. Fear of retaliation leads them to remain silent and not retaliate, causing the bullying to escalate. Therefore, in cases of school violence, do not advise children to endure it. We do not condone children using violence against others. We also do not encourage using violence to control violence, but we need to teach children how to respond positively. This means knowing how to defend themselves and speak out against violence instead of passively accepting it and becoming victims.
