The New York Times reported on April 2nd, citing sources, that Amazon was the unexpected last-minute bidder to acquire TikTok's operations, preventing the platform from being banned in the United States.
According to a 2024 US government law, ByteDance – the China-based parent company of TikTok – is required to divest, or the app will face a ban in the US.
The U.S. is concerned that ByteDance's ownership of TikTok could make the app a tool for the Chinese government to conduct influence campaigns and collect data on American citizens. Under the new law, ByteDance is required to sell TikTok by April 5th, or face a ban on operating in the U.S.
However, the source also added that other parties involved in the negotiations did not seem to take Amazon's offer seriously. According to a person familiar with the matter, the e-commerce giant made its bid to acquire TikTok in the US through a letter sent to Vice President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Amazon previously attempted to create a TikTok clone called Inspire within its shopping app. According to sources cited by the New York Times , internal sources at the e-commerce platform viewed this as a groundbreaking initiative, but it was deemed unsuccessful in attracting shoppers.
Despite the US setting a deadline, China could play a decisive role in this deal. Trump has acknowledged that approval from the Chinese government is a crucial factor.
