According to TheVerge , Amazon has just announced that it will discontinue its App Store service for Android devices on August 20th. While not giving a specific reason, the company confirmed that the App Store will continue to operate on Fire TV and Fire tablets, where it serves as the default app marketplace. Downloaded apps will not be automatically deleted, but their continued functionality cannot be guaranteed as they will no longer receive updates.
Despite offering numerous daily deals and free apps, the Amazon Appstore failed due to a lack of developer support and its reliance on Fire OS.

In addition to closing the App Store, Amazon will also end its Amazon Coins program – a cryptocurrency previously used to purchase apps and in-app items on the company's app store. Users will no longer be able to purchase Amazon Coins after February 20, 2025, but existing balances can still be used. Any remaining Amazon Coins after August 20 will be refunded, with details to be announced later.
This decision raised many questions because Amazon's Fire OS operating system itself is based on Android. However, the reality is that the App Store has never been able to compete with the Google Play Store. When it first launched in 2011, Amazon tried to make its mark with unique features such as allowing users to "try out" apps on the web browser, offering free versions of some paid apps, and pre-installing them on the Fire Phone – a failed Amazon product.
Furthermore, Amazon previously attempted to expand its user base by allowing sideloading of the App Store onto third-party Android devices. However, this strategy did not help the platform grow as expected, especially since the Android app market remains dominated by Google. This issue was raised in the Epic Games vs. Google lawsuit, where Epic Games accused Google of maintaining an illegal monopoly in the app market.
Amazon even tried to circumvent Google's regulations by integrating the App Store into the main Amazon app, but Google quickly blocked this. With all these obstacles, Amazon's App Store on Android gradually became a less-discussed platform, and this closure is likely just the formalization of its failure to compete with Google Play.
