Amazon has just introduced the next generation of its Proteus logistics robots (autonomous robots used to transport goods in warehouses), integrated with artificial intelligence (AI), as the company accelerates its automation strategy and expands delivery services in Europe.
This move is part of a plan to invest approximately 10 billion euros (11.6 billion USD) to upgrade distribution systems and shorten delivery times across the region.
At the Delivering the Future EMEA 2026 technology and logistics event held at the Dartford distribution center in East London, Amazon announced that a new version of Proteus can respond to human conversational commands and independently determine routes and prioritize tasks instead of simply performing pre-programmed tasks.

Scott Dresser, Vice President of Amazon Robotics, said that the way humans interact with robots is changing rapidly. “You just give the request, and the robot automatically determines the priority, the route, and the time needed,” he said.
Alongside Proteus, Amazon also introduced the STARK product handling system and the Vulcan robot, which has tactile sensing capabilities, allowing for more precise product handling.
The push for automation is happening alongside plans to expand its delivery network. Amazon plans to open more than 25 same-day delivery locations in Europe this year, while continuing to expand its fresh food delivery service in many international markets.
Behind these new technologies lies a massive wave of investment in AI. Amazon forecasts capital spending in 2026 to increase by more than 50%, to around $200 billion, reflecting the increasingly fierce competition among tech corporations in applying AI to cloud computing, e-commerce, and logistics.
