General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong shared with artists and writers at the ceremony commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam Union of Literary and Artistic Associations (July 25, 1948 - July 25, 2023): Only great aspirations and ambitions for creativity can go far and be sustainable. These are truly heartfelt, profound, and deeply moving words.

The General Secretary met and conversed with representatives of artists and writers from across the country on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam Union of Associations of Literature and Arts and the awarding of the Golden Star Order on July 25, 2018.
Right from the opening remarks, the General Secretary expressed his profound respect and gratitude to the great President Ho Chi Minh , the outstanding cultural figure, the beloved Uncle Ho - who laid the first foundations for the new culture, literature and art in our country.
The General Secretary remembered and expressed gratitude to the talented artists and writers who dedicated and sacrificed themselves in the revolutionary cause of the nation; their names and works have become ingrained in the people's memory, bringing glory to the revolutionary culture, literature, and art of our country.
The General Secretary affirmed the immense contributions of generations of artists and writers: Successive generations of artists and writers have created many valuable works in various fields, making worthy contributions to the cause of national liberation, building and defending the Fatherland.
The General Secretary deeply appreciated the contributions of literature and art, noting that: Continuing to innovate, closely adhering to the vibrant reality of the country, possessing a calm, subtle, and positive perspective, actively supporting social stability, strengthening confidence, and having a dialectical view of life; praising and affirming what is good and positive; encouraging new factors and achievements, "using light to dispel darkness"; and promoting social positivity.
Literature and art are increasingly developing in diverse, rich, innovative, and promising ways; the trend towards professionalization is increasingly emphasized; national identity is deepening, achieving great success and making significant progress. The current state of thought and sentiment among intellectuals and artists has significantly contributed to the political stability of society and the development of the country.
However, alongside the great achievements and contributions of artists and writers, the General Secretary also frankly pointed out limitations and weaknesses that need to be addressed promptly.
In particular, there are still some individuals whose revolutionary goals and ideals have faded, who disregard social responsibility and civic duty. Their works often stray from the realities of the country and its people. Some statements, memoirs, books, websites, and social media posts contain unconstructive or even extremist content. In some cases, there is a phenomenon of "blackening" the sacred values of history and the regime, excessively elevating the "self" to call for creative freedom... and denying the Party's leadership role in literature and art.
The General Secretary considered himself a member of the Association, and he suggested that all comrades, brothers, sisters, and colleagues engage in frank and constructive discussions with a high sense of responsibility, practicing self-reflection and self-correction to overcome limitations and weaknesses in literary and artistic creation and criticism, as well as in the organization and operation of the Associations and Federations of Literary and Artistic Associations nationwide.
The General Secretary suggested strategic directions for reforming creative activities in culture and arts: Encouraging the exploration and creativity of artists.

In this noble and great undertaking of the entire nation, the intellectual community, including scientific and technological intellectuals and social science and humanities intellectuals, among whom are artists and writers, plays a particularly important role and position, because intellectuals and talented people are the lifeblood of the nation, the precious capital of the people.
Our ancestors taught: "Talented people are the lifeblood of the nation; when this lifeblood is strong, the country becomes powerful and great; when it is weak, the country becomes weak and declines." For a long time, our Party has consistently affirmed: "Literature and art are very important and particularly refined fields of culture; they are essential needs, expressing the aspirations for truth, goodness, and beauty of humankind; they are one of the great driving forces that directly contribute to building the spiritual foundation of society and the comprehensive development of Vietnamese people" during the period of accelerating industrialization and modernization, actively and proactively integrating into the international community to develop the country rapidly and sustainably.
More than ever, artists must stay close to life, daring to delve into the cutting-edge aspects of life in agriculture, industry, services, commerce, and the security, defense, and foreign affairs fronts; reaching out to remote areas, ethnic minority regions, border areas, and islands to discover and reflect new factors, effective methods, and emerging issues in life, actively and responsibly participating in the tasks of society.
In particular, the fight against corruption and negative practices contributes to building a socialist, civilized, elegant, and humane Vietnamese people. Only in this way can our literature and art produce good works that move people's hearts and are necessary for the public and for society.
The General Secretary kindly told the young writers: Only great aspirations and ambitions can go far and last. We all know that in our time, there are many things to say and write about in the life around us, but the important thing is how to say and how to write. Many people often say that literature and art must illuminate life, not just be a place where life is reflected; literature and art should nurture and elevate humanity, not just be a place to express personal feelings and belittle people.
Hopefully, artists and writers will recognize and clearly express this, so as to be worthy of the people's renewed trust, love, and hope; and not let mediocrity and complacency haunt them.
The General Secretary pointed out: Comrades need to constantly learn and draw good lessons from previous generations to continue to dedicate themselves, go further, and be more steadfast. Perhaps that lesson is: Great aspirations, lofty ideals, harmonizing one's heart with the heartbeat of the entire nation, immersing oneself in the rich and vibrant realities of people's lives, rather than falling into personal moods, dwelling on negative thoughts, being pessimistic, using petty tricks instead of talent, viewing life from a narrow perspective, or even considering art and literature simply as a hobby, entertainment, or a trivial passion.
The reality of literary life in our country and around the world shows that great authors are those with great aspirations and ambitions, a broad vision, and profound thinking. Only with great aspirations and ambitions for creativity can one go far and endure.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's concern for culture, arts, and artists nationwide is truly thoughtful, thorough, profound, and deeply moving.
