Does a vegetarian diet cause erectile dysfunction?

VnExpressVnExpress27/05/2023

I am 38 years old this year, and my body mass index is at level one obesity (27). Through research, I found that vegetarianism helps with weight loss and is good for health, preventing many diseases.

However, I've heard that a vegetarian diet can weaken sexual function. Could you please advise me, doctor? (Hoang An, Bien Hoa, Dong Nai )

A vegetarian diet, consisting solely of plant-based foods and excluding animal products, is a choice for many people for various reasons (religion, preference). A properly implemented vegetarian diet, ensuring the body receives the necessary nutrients, can offer numerous health benefits such as maintaining a healthy weight, preventing obesity, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure, and protecting the gut. However, improper eating habits can lead to nutrient deficiencies, affecting health and potentially causing erectile dysfunction in men.

For sexual activity to function smoothly, three factors are necessary: nerves, hormones (testosterone), and blood vessels (related to nitric oxide). When sexual stimulation occurs, the brain sends signals to the spinal cord and the erectile tissues within the two corpora cavernosa of the penis, ensuring sufficient and rapid blood flow to facilitate erection. However, vegetarians are often deficient in iron, zinc, protein, vitamin B12, and other substances that help increase blood flow and enable normal sexual function.

These nutrients are usually abundant in animal meats, eggs, and dairy products, and less so in some vegetables, nuts, grains, dried seeds, fresh fruits, and legumes. Therefore, vegetarians must know how to choose the right foods and consume sufficient amounts daily. However, achieving this is very difficult, and few people succeed, so a vegetarian diet carries a high risk of leading to erectile dysfunction due to nutrient deficiencies. In particular, vegetarian men are prone to iron and vitamin B deficiencies, which can cause testicular atrophy, decreased sexual health, insufficient sperm production in terms of quantity and quality, and reduced fertility.

To ensure good health and sexual function, men need a scientific and balanced diet containing the four essential nutrient groups: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and vitamins and minerals, in balanced proportions. Foods rich in protein and fat for vegetarians include eggs, milk, dairy products, mushrooms, beans and grains, nuts, avocados, and vegetable oils.

In addition, men should maintain a daily exercise routine of 30-60 minutes. Physical activity boosts the immune system, strengthens muscles, and improves hormone levels, effectively enhancing sexual function. Men can incorporate exercises such as gym workouts, weightlifting, running, swimming, yoga, and Kegel exercises.
