Experiencing a mix of emotions while watching the musical "Silk's House" at the auditorium of the University of Technology ( Da Nang University), student Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao (3rd year, Faculty of Architecture, University of Technology) expressed, "Silk's House is a work with profound humanistic values, subtle and unconventional in its presentation, and evokes reflections on the human condition. Thao felt that the light and dark aspects in the work were skillfully and gently placed, contributing to highlighting the theme of the musical."
For student Le Duy Khoa (4th year, Mathematics Department, University of Education), the musical drama vividly portrayed the joys, sorrows, resentments, and anger of the characters. There were details that made Khoa burst out laughing because of the characters' charm, and there were moments that brought him to tears, moved by the inner turmoil of the character Lua.
“Silk House” is inspired by the documentary “The Last Journey of Ms. Phung,” which won the Special Mention award at the 2014 Chopshots Southeast Asian Documentary Film Festival and received an honorable mention in the Documentary category at the 2013 Golden Kite Awards. Student Nguyen Viet Quynh Nhung, a member of the Sclub and scriptwriter for the musical, said that to make the two-hour program a success, club members spent three months perfecting the script, rehearsing, and mobilizing 100 members, including 50 program staff, 25 main actors, and 25 support staff.
During the implementation process, the group encountered numerous difficulties regarding funding, props, rehearsal venues, and weather... but with the aim of raising funds to help children in remote areas, most members demonstrated a strong spirit of solidarity and volunteerism. From the original work, the club creatively added details to create a new script that suited the intended purpose and message. The musical's content is a heartwarming story about the miraculous journey of Lụa, a girl abandoned by her mother at a young age but cared for and nurtured by artists in a traveling theater troupe.
However, when her biological mother unexpectedly reappears and wants to take Lụa back, Lụa is faced with a difficult choice between family ties and her roots, between the debt of giving birth and the debt of raising her. These conflicts cause Lụa to confront many emotions in every glance and breath, ultimately realizing that "home" is not just a place to live, but a place that must contain genuine love...
"Through this musical performance, the club hopes to create a beneficial platform where members have the opportunity to learn, interact, and pursue their passions for art together. The club hopes the program can spread positive values and inspire young people to contribute to the community," Nhung happily said.
According to Nguyen Vu Duy Phuong, the head of Sclub, the club was founded in 2009 with the initial goal of fostering a love of reading. Since 2015, the club has aimed to create an environment for students to develop soft skills in musical theater performance, starting with the musical "Romeo & Juliet".
Over time, the club's musical theater activities have attracted approximately 1,500 members, mostly students from the city. Above all, the club hopes that musical theater will not only be a recreational activity but also serve as a platform for organizing volunteer programs. Following the success of previous years, the club organized the musical "Silk's House" to raise funds for the "Green Seed" project in mid-June for children in Hamlet 3, Tra Leng Commune, Nam Tra My District.
"The club is very happy that the concert sold 800 tickets, which is a source of motivation for the group to plan to donate gifts to children. Last year, the club also organized the charity program 'Summer Sunshine' to build solar-powered streetlights for the people of Apat village (A Vuong commune, Tay Giang district, Quang Nam province). The club hopes that in the future, it will organize more musical and theatrical nights to bring joy to disadvantaged people and children," Phuong expressed.
According to Truong Ngoc Son, Secretary of the Youth Union of the Polytechnic University, the musical drama was meticulously planned by the club, from the content to the music and stage design. The higher purpose was to raise funds for charitable projects, which is also the goal the university is aiming for: to help students develop comprehensively, not only academically but also in terms of community spirit.
