Tak Ngo school used to be a well-equipped school where 34 students from the mountainous Tra Linh commune, Da Nang city, studied. Following a series of storms and flash floods, the school building is now in a state of severe damage. The concrete slabs looked like they were about to break apart, threatening to collapse at any moment. 34 students from the school branch – mostly from the Xơ Đăng ethnic group – were immediately transferred to Ngọc Linh Primary School (about an hour's drive from the old school branch). Here, the school's meeting room has been repurposed into a classroom with all the necessary equipment to ensure that the students' learning is not interrupted. Initially unfamiliar with the school and classrooms, after more than a week of studying, the students have gradually become accustomed to and excited about the new, spacious, modern, and safer learning environment.
Last week, the school invited parents to visit the "special classroom" so they could get a feel for the atmosphere and feel reassured about the new school. Teachers are currently working extra hours to make up for the knowledge lost due to school closures caused by storms and floods. The school and teachers also proactively purchased and distributed school supplies free of charge to ensure that learning could proceed smoothly. In particular, the school, along with the local government of Tra Linh commune, has created conditions for the children to stay at Ngoc Linh Primary School as boarding students completely free of charge.
Every day, in addition to lunch, the school will also provide dinner for the children. The meals were nutritious and incredibly delicious. The meals were nutritious and incredibly delicious. A typical school day will end at around 8 PM. The students were assigned to the dormitory area, which had bunk beds. Each evening, three teachers or school staff members will be assigned to be on duty at the school to assist the students in resting.
Around 8:30 PM, all the students were fast asleep. This special class not only demonstrates the efforts of the local community and Ngoc Linh Primary School in ensuring teaching and learning for students in areas affected by natural disasters, but it also reflects the profound humanity and love of the teachers for their students.
