According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, Apple plans to expand its Siri assistant to third-party AI models, aiming to make the iPhone a broader AI platform.

"The company is preparing this as part of the upcoming Siri upgrade for iOS 27. The assistant can currently call ChatGPT through an agreement with OpenAI, but Apple will allow competing services to do the same," Gurman said.

These changes are expected to help Apple catch up with its rivals in the AI ​​field. A new version of Siri, the assistant that first launched 15 years ago, is the centerpiece of the plan.

"Open the door" Siri

According to Gurman, Apple is developing a new tool that will allow the installation of AI chatbots through the App Store and integration with Siri. These chatbots will also work with the standalone Siri app and other features within the Apple Intelligence platform.

For example, if you install Google Gemini or Claude on an iPhone, users can ask Siri to query from the corresponding models. This works similarly to integrating ChatGPT into Siri currently.

Gurman suggests that this solution could help Apple earn more money from transaction fees for purchasing AI packages through the App Store.

This change is separate from Apple's collaboration with Google to develop Siri based on the Gemini model. Specifically, the agreement primarily revolved around the underlying technology for Siri to function, while the extended system allowed for direct activation of Gemini through Siri.

Users can enable or disable the services they want to integrate into Siri through the settings in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

"The extension allows agents from apps to work with Siri, the Siri app, and other features on the device," according to the announcement in the upcoming operating system beta. Users will be redirected to the App Store to download their desired AI app.

Apple is expected to announce new software at the WWDC 2026 developer conference on June 8th. With more than two months to go, the features could still change. On its official website, Apple promises to provide information about "AI-related improvements" at the event.

ChatGPT is no longer a monopoly.

According to Bloomberg , this move will eliminate ChatGPT's monopoly on iOS. From the outset, there have been debates about whether OpenAI is the right partner.

Specifically, AI director John Giannandrea questioned OpenAI's long-term viability, while he personally supported the deal with Google.

Before choosing ChatGPT as its initial partner for Apple Intelligence, Apple reportedly conducted internal testing of several chatbots. After negotiations, the company decided to use OpenAI's solution as it was the "best option" at the time.

If Apple shifts to this new strategy, it could leverage third-party AI services more quickly, while expanding AI integration across its operating system without the need for intense business negotiations.

Currently, users can ask Siri to translate queries to ChatGPT by making a direct request. On the new system, users can specify which AI service to use for each query.

Other major AI platforms also release apps on iOS, including Perplexity, Alexa, Meta AI, Grok, and Copilot. However, it is unclear whether Apple will allow all AI apps to integrate with Siri or if a specific approval process is required.

During the development of Apple Intelligence, the company envisioned Siri connecting with various AI services, while also exploring the idea of ​​chatbots for specialized tasks.
