Although iPhones are considered water-resistant and meet certain standards that allow Apple to give them an IP68 rating, iPhone warranties do not cover water damage.
This isn't unique to Apple; Android phone manufacturers also don't provide warranty coverage for water damage, even if the device has an IP68 or IP67 rating.
Apple states that the iPhone 15 series is water-resistant to a depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. That's certainly higher than the IP68 standard, but it doesn't mean you can take your iPhone 15 into the bathtub, run it under the shower, or take it diving with you unless it's in a specialized waterproof case. If something goes wrong, Apple will not provide warranty coverage in such cases.
However, according to PhoneArena , a new patent granted last week by the US Patent and Trademark Office shows that Apple is developing a version of the iPhone that can operate underwater.
The patent, titled "Underwater User Interface," also mentions Apple adjusting the iOS platform when the iPhone is underwater to make it easier to use.
An illustration in the patent shows that iPhone users can zoom in and out of the camera and images by pressing the volume button instead of using the touchscreen.
If Apple creates a truly waterproof iPhone, hopefully it will come with a warranty covering water damage.
It's unclear when a waterproof iPhone will be released, but if it does become a reality, it would be a fantastic feature to showcase to users.
