While the iPhone is considered water-resistant and meets certain standards that allow Apple to give it an IP68 rating, the iPhone warranty does not cover cases of water damage to the device.
This is not just Apple, but also Android phone manufacturers do not cover water damage even if the device has an IP68 or IP67 rating.
Apple says the iPhone 15 series is water-resistant up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. That’s definitely higher than the IP68 standard, but that doesn’t mean you can take your iPhone 15 into the bath or shower or go diving with it unless it’s in a specially designed waterproof case. Because if something goes wrong, Apple won’t cover it under warranty.
However, according to PhoneArena , a new patent granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office last week shows that Apple is developing a version of the iPhone that can operate underwater.
The patent, titled “Underwater User Interface,” also describes Apple tweaking the iOS platform when the iPhone is underwater to make it easier to use.
An illustration in the patent shows that iPhone users can zoom in and out of the camera by pressing the volume button instead of using the touch screen.
If Apple does make a truly water-resistant iPhone, hopefully it will come with a warranty that covers water damage.
It's unclear when a waterproof iPhone will be released, but if it does happen, it would be a great feature to introduce to users.
