Apple launches $150 canvas bag for iPhone

Apple's fabric bag accessory for iPhone uses 3D weaving technique, sold in limited quantities only.

Apple has just launched the iPhone Pocket, a pouch and fabric strap accessory for the iPhone. According to AppleInsider , the product was designed by Issey Miyake, the Japanese designer who created the signature turtleneck sweater of the late CEO Steve Jobs.

“Apple and Issey Miyake share an approach that celebrates craftsmanship, simplicity, and fun. This sleeve is a result of that idea, and it looks and feels natural when combined with our products,” Molly Anderson, Apple’s vice president of Industrial Design, said in a company press release.

The iPhone Pocket has a streamlined design, with an iPhone pocket in the middle. When placed in the pocket, part of the phone's camera is exposed. Thanks to the use of elastic fabric, users can pull the pocket to look at the iPhone screen, check the time or read notifications without taking the device out of the pocket.

Apple says the iPhone Pocket's colors are designed to be easy to match with other iPhones. Users can still put AirPods or everyday items in the pocket to carry everywhere. The product supports attaching to a bag, wearing it over the shoulder or wrist.

According to Apple, the idea for the iPhone Pocket came from the concept of “a piece of cloth”. Apple’s design team and Issey Miyake collaborated to create the iPhone Pocket with a 3D knit structure. In the textile industry, this technique uses a 3D knitting machine, attaching a thread to create a finished product by weaving loops of yarn on top of each other according to a predetermined design.

Compared to traditional knitting, 3D knitting does not require cutting fabric, avoiding material waste. This means the iPhone Pocket is created from just one piece of fabric.

“The design of the iPhone Pocket represents the connection between the iPhone and the user, while still ensuring the uniformity and versatility in use - the characteristic elements of Apple products,” said Yoshiyuki Miyamae, design director of Miyake Design Studio.

Apple says the iPhone Pocket is being produced in limited quantities. The accessory comes in two length options, the short version (pictured) costs $150 in eight colors, while the long version comes in just three colors and costs $230 .

The iPhone Pocket will be available from November 14, but only in certain countries, including France, mainland China, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, and the US. Some stores in these areas will have staff to help customers match the color of the case to the iPhone.
