A new study shows that the Apple Watch can detect atrial fibrillation at a significantly higher rate than routine health checkups. Atrial fibrillation is a dangerous heart rhythm disorder that often develops silently but significantly increases the risk of blood clots and stroke.
The study was conducted in the Netherlands on 437 people over the age of 65, a group at high risk of stroke. After 6 months of follow-up, atrial fibrillation was detected in 9.6% of Apple Watch wearers, compared to only 2.3% in the group undergoing routine checkups.
Science and technology promote socio-economic development in rural, mountainous, and ethnic minority areas; science and technology become a sustainable livelihood. The Ministry of Science and Technology's summary report on the results of 10 years of implementing the Program to support the application and transfer of scientific and technological advancements for socio-economic development in rural, mountainous, and ethnic minority areas (the Program) has revealed many production models that bring high economic value, affirming the key role of bringing science and technology closer to the people, especially in mountainous areas and ethnic minority communities.
The biggest advantage of the Apple Watch lies in its ability to continuously monitor heart rate for many hours each day, rather than just checking it for short periods. Thanks to its heart rate sensor and ECG feature, the smartwatch can detect even asymptomatic atrial fibrillation. However, the study also indicated that nearly 50% of atrial fibrillation alerts from the Apple Watch are false positives, easily causing unnecessary anxiety.
Experts emphasize that the Apple Watch is a tool for early detection, but users still need to see a doctor for an accurate diagnosis.
