Arbeloa couldn't hide his frustration after the match. |
Following the 3-4 defeat against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on the morning of April 16th, Alvaro Arbeloa could not hide his anger in the press conference. The Spanish coach stated that the second yellow card given to Eduardo Camavinga was "incomprehensible" and ruined the entire course of the tie.
According to Arbeloa, the situation that led to the red card didn't deserve a warning, let alone a dismissal. He even questioned whether referee Slavko Vincic was aware that Camavinga had already received a yellow card, as even the Bayern players had to remind him.
"The referee didn't even know he had a card, that's why he showed it, but he ruined what was supposed to be a beautiful match," Arbeloa emphasized.
Prior to the turning point, Real Madrid played evenly and took the lead on several occasions. Arbeloa's team controlled the game well in the first half and created numerous clear chances. However, when playing with ten men, they couldn't maintain the intensity and gradually lost their advantage under pressure from their opponents.
The coach, born in 1983, admitted that the general feeling in the dressing room was one of "pain and injustice." He regretted that all the team's efforts were wiped out by a controversial decision. Nevertheless, Arbeloa still praised his players, affirming that they fought hard and deserved to be proud.
This defeat means Real Madrid missed the chance to win their 16th Champions League title. Arbeloa said he wasn't concerned about his personal future, but only felt sorry for the team and the fans.
Real Madrid's European campaign ended with much regret, while the controversy surrounding Camavinga's red card shows no signs of subsiding.
Concluding their Champions League quarter-final matches, Real Madrid lost to Bayern Munich with an aggregate score of 4-6. In the first leg, they suffered a 1-2 defeat at their home stadium, Santiago Bernabeu. For Real Madrid, a trophyless season seems imminent.
