On September 25, the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board said that the Provincial Party Standing Committee has agreed in principle to let the Provincial People's Committee complete the dossier to submit to UNESCO to recognize Phong Nha - Ke Bang as a World Biosphere Reserve.
The Management Board of the park said that Phong Nha - Ke Bang Biosphere Reserve has an area of 515,830 hectares, with a population of about 159,325 people. Of which, the core zone is the entire area of the National Park (123,326 hectares), the buffer zone is 220,055 hectares with 7 bordering communes, and the transition zone is 172,449 hectares spread over 10 neighboring communes. When an area is recognized as a world Biosphere Reserve, there will be many benefits for conservation and development, and at the same time contribute to the country in implementing international commitments on biodiversity.
According to the Management Board, this title will first help protect one of the world's largest and oldest tropical karst areas with more than 447 caves, primary forest ecosystems, evergreen forests, underground rivers and many endemic and rare species. Natural values will be preserved, reducing the risk of degradation and overexploitation.
In terms of socio -economics, the international brand from the Biosphere Reserve will help Phong Nha - Ke Bang attract domestic and foreign tourists, promote eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and homestay services. Local communities benefit from green livelihoods such as sustainable agricultural and forestry production, medicinal plant cultivation, and OCOP product development. At the same time, opportunities to access international capital sources and programs to support conservation and community development are also expanded.
Phong Nha - Ke Bang also has scientific value, being a "living laboratory" for interdisciplinary research on geology, biology, climate, indigenous culture, and is also a location for organizing environmental education programs.
The title of Biosphere Reserve will enhance the ability of international cooperation, connect Phong Nha - Ke Bang with the network of biosphere reserves and national parks globally, open up opportunities for cooperation in research, management, sustainable tourism development, and promote the image of Quang Tri to the world.
