The National Cheo Festival is a national-scale art activity, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism every three years, to summarize and evaluate the quality of creation, staging and performance of Cheo art by art units nationwide. This is also an opportunity to honor collectives and individuals who have made many contributions to the work of preserving and promoting the artistic value of Cheo - a unique national theatrical form, rich in identity and vitality in the spiritual life of Vietnamese people.
The festival is an opportunity for artists, actors, musicians, directors, painters, choreographers, etc. to demonstrate their talents, exchange and share creative experiences, and at the same time contribute to affirming the position of Cheo stage in the general picture of Vietnamese performing arts in the period of integration and development.

The National Cheo Festival - 2025 brings together 11 professional Cheo art troupes from many provinces and cities across the country (Vietnam National Traditional Theater, Hanoi Cheo Theater, Military Cheo Theater, Ninh Binh Provincial Art Theater, Hai Phong Traditional Theater, Hung Yen Cheo Theater, Lam Son Thanh Hoa Art Theater, Phu Tho Province Lac Hong Theater, Bac Ninh Cheo Theater, Quang Ninh Provincial Art Troupe, Thai Nguyen Province Ethnic Groups Art Troupe) with 21 elaborately staged plays, deeply reflecting social life, praising the homeland, country, and people of Vietnam, honoring ethical and humanistic values and aspirations for goodness.
With nearly 900 artists, actors and musicians participating in the performance, it promises to bring to the audience who love Cheo unique works, carefully invested in both ideological content and staging art, demonstrating the dedication, talent and serious working spirit of art units across the country.
Each unit participates in 01 play. In case a public art unit has many troupes, the play can register to participate in the Festival corresponding to the number of troupes. Each play has a duration of 90 minutes to 120 minutes excluding intermission (if any). Artists and actors playing the main and supporting roles cannot participate in more than 02 plays at the Festival.
The themes of the performances must have clear ideas and content, not contrary to the Party's guidelines and policies and the State's laws; not insulting leaders, national heroes, celebrities; infringing on the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and individuals; not contrary to the will and aspirations of the People; promoting beauty and human values, having a predictive nature, having a positive impact on social life, awareness of art-loving audiences and all classes of people, building and developing comprehensive human beings. Arousing the aspiration to develop a prosperous and happy country; promoting cultural values and the strength of the Vietnamese people in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland, especially building an advanced Vietnamese culture with a strong national identity.

The work achieves high aesthetic value, with new creative exploration of art through the actors' technical handling of acting based on the basic principles, characteristics of the Cheo art form. The creativity of the participants in the play must be unified, creating a complete play, consistent in style.
The Festival's Art Council includes prestigious artists, researchers, managers, and experts in the field of Cheo theater, ensuring objective, fair, and scientific evaluation.
The Festival's awards include: Gold Medals and Silver Medals for plays with high content and artistic quality, meeting the criteria in the Judging and Awarding Regulations; Gold Medals and Silver Medals for individual performing artists (plays, roles) meeting the criteria in the Judging and Awarding Regulations; Artists and actors participating in many roles in many plays at the Festival, if reaching the awarding score, will only receive 01 highest award; 01 excellent award (if any) for each creative element in the plays participating in the Festival including: Scriptwriter; Director; Musician; Art designer; Choreographer.
