Atletico's crisis stems not only from poor results on the pitch but also from internal management issues. |
In the early hours of February 1st, the Spanish capital team drew 0-0 away at Levante in the 22nd round of La Liga, marking their worst performance of the season. Within just three days, Atletico Madrid lost to Bodo/Glimt and failed to beat Levante, two teams considered significantly weaker than them.
Against Levante (ranked 19th), Atletico created almost no clear-cut chances, relying mainly on set pieces, and were unable to break through the opposing defense despite fielding key players like Julian Alvarez, Koke, and David Hancko.
This is a serious setback for the Madrid club in their pursuit of the La Liga title. They are now 10 points behind leaders Barcelona. In the Champions League, Atletico must play a play-off series against Club Brugge after a poor performance in the qualifying phase.
Atletico have created virtually no significant chances in their last two matches. Coach Diego Simeone is under immense pressure, with rumors even circulating that he will leave at the end of the season. With the mid-season transfer window about to close, Simeone is still waiting for new signings, while the club's management expects him to revitalize the team.
The serious injuries to Alexander Sorloth (brain injury) and Pablo Barrios' muscle injury, coupled with the absence of Giuliano Simeone and Antoine Griezmann, further increased the feeling of helplessness both professionally and managerially.

Simeone is considering leaving Atletico. |
Internal conflicts only worsened the situation. Coach Simeone repeatedly publicly called for reinforcements during the January transfer window, but Sporting Director Mateu Alemany and CEO Miguel Angel Gil did almost nothing, only selling players (Galan, Gallagher, Raspadori) without buying any.
Simeone once mocked the idea of using young players as replacements, while the management seemed to only react when a full-blown crisis occurred. This led to the Simeone-Alemany "battle," severely damaging Cholo's position and team morale.
Simeone's future is currently a big question mark. The Argentinian coach has led Atletico since December 2011 and has a contract until 2027.
Numerous sources indicate that the club is planning to find a replacement and is considering sacking Simeone if Atletico finishes the 2025/26 season poorly.
Coach Simeone himself has hinted several times at leaving, feeling the need for a new environment with competition and also feeling tired of working at Atletico Madrid after 15 years. The current poor results could be the final straw between the two sides.
