Tottenham suffered a crushing defeat.

Atlético Madrid capitalized on a disastrous first half for Tottenham Hotspur to secure a resounding victory in the first leg of the round of 16, extending their unbeaten home run in Champions League knockout rounds to 20 matches.

From the very first minutes, Tottenham put themselves in a difficult position due to serious individual errors. After only 6 minutes of play, goalkeeper Antonín Kinsk7 slipped while passing the ball, allowing Ademola Lookman to steal it and pass it across to Julián Alvarez. The Argentinian striker did not shoot but passed to Marcos Llorente, who easily opened the scoring for Atlético.

The disaster didn't stop there, as eight minutes later, Micky van de Ven also slipped in a defensive situation, allowing Antoine Griezmann to take advantage and double the lead.

Spurs' nightmare continued early in the second half when Kinsky misjudged a clearance, allowing Alvarez to easily score into an empty net. The Czech goalkeeper was then substituted early, but his replacement, Guglielmo Vicario, was also quickly found to have conceded a goal. From Griezmann's free kick, Pape Matar Sarr's clumsy clearance deflected the ball right into the path of Robin Le Normand, who made it 4-0.

The goalkeeper's mistake led to Spurs' early collapse.

Despite being under pressure, Tottenham managed to fight back. Pedro Porro scored to reduce the deficit after a pass from Richarlison, giving the visitors a glimmer of hope. However, all efforts almost collapsed when Jan Oblak saved Richarlison's shot, before Griezmann headed the ball to Alvarez, who sprinted nearly 60 meters to score his second goal, making it 5-1.

Dominic Solanke then scored another goal for Tottenham, but that wasn't enough to change the outcome. With a 2-5 defeat, Spurs will need to score at least three goals and keep a clean sheet at home to have any chance of a comeback.
