At the awards ceremony for the 3rd "The Doctor in My Heart" writing contest organized by the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper, one of the most touching stories was that of Dr. Luan Thanh Truong, who has dedicated nearly 20 years to Thanh An island commune, Can Gio district – a place still facing many difficulties and lacking in medical facilities.
The person who brought the story of Dr. Luan Thanh Truong to readers is Ms. Dang Dieu Ha. Ms. Ha shared: "Many years ago, when I was a student participating in the Summer Cultural Light program in Can Gio, I witnessed firsthand the hardships of the people on the island, especially in Thanh An commune – the poorest in the district. When I learned that Dr. Truong volunteered to stay there to care for the community's health, I decided to write about him with the hope of spreading the image of a dedicated doctor who devotes himself wholeheartedly to the remote areas."
Despite the challenging working conditions, Dr. Truong persevered in treating and caring for the local community. He faced numerous emergency cases, ranging from obstetrics and surgery to trauma cases such as fractures.
"He's not just a doctor; he's also a relative and friend to the people here. He regularly helps poor patients and organizes free medical check-ups for disadvantaged areas," Ms. Ha said.

Recalling his journey, Dr. Truong shared: "When I came to Thanh An, I didn't think I would stay here for long. But then, witnessing many difficult circumstances, many people losing their lives due to a lack of medical knowledge, I couldn't turn a blind eye."
Born into a poor family and the eldest of five siblings, Dr. Truong failed the university entrance exam three times. But it was precisely his difficult circumstances that motivated him to persevere in pursuing a career in medicine, ultimately dedicating his youth to caring for the people in remote island communities.
With over two decades of dedication to the people of the island commune, Dr. Truong is a prime example of a physician who always prioritizes medical ethics and tirelessly contributes to community health.
