Motivation from a "second home"
In the days of September, the scorching sun of Phu Yen province enveloped the rocky mountains surrounding the Tuy An tunnel construction site, part of package XL01 of the Chi Thanh - Van Phong project.
The sounds of vehicles, drilling machines, and construction equipment filled the air, along with hundreds of engineers and workers tirelessly working to gradually advance deeper into the Long Son mountain tunnel, shaping its form.
Construction of the Tuy An tunnel is underway on the Chi Thanh - Van Phong section of the expressway.
At 5:30 a.m., groups of tunnel diggers donned their protective gear, getting ready for the day's work.
No amount of words from writers like us can fully capture the essence of tunnel digging as well as witnessing it firsthand, seeing the hardships and difficulties, and understanding the willpower and faith of the people working there.
The clock had just struck 9 o'clock, but inside the tunnel, the temperature had already risen to over 50 degrees Celsius. The project management team had to equip the tunnel with additional equipment and high-capacity dust extraction fans to support the engineers and workers during the work process.
Having worked for Deo Ca Group for three years, and having participated in the completion of the Truong Vinh tunnel before being transferred to the Tuy An tunnel construction site, worker Nguyen Huu Dan confided: "Every day working inside the rocky mountains is a challenge, not only for physical health but also for perseverance and resilience."
"We faced the sweltering heat and stifling conditions inside the mountain, as well as the challenging construction terrain. However, it was from these difficulties that the camaraderie among colleagues grew stronger. Newcomers to the tunnel were guided and instructed meticulously by their seniors, step by step, before they began their work," Dần confided.
What motivates him and his colleagues to persevere so much? "It's work, if everyone chooses the easy tasks, who will do the hard work?" Mr. Dan said, adding that although the work is arduous, the workers are fortunate to witness the results of their efforts every day.
With the support of the unit's leadership, the engineers and workers of Deo Ca Group are always full of enthusiasm and responsibility, determined to complete their assigned tasks at the Chi Thanh - Van Phong project on schedule.
"At the foot of the high mountain, a tunnel will be opened to connect to the country's main highway, which is the happiest thing. The management team also cares a lot about the team! The pressure to meet the deadline is immense, but everyone feels understood, encouraged, and supported," said Mr. Dan.
Determined to conquer the only tunnel through the mountain in the Chi Thanh – Van Phong section of the expressway project, Mr. Nguyen Phi Do, Head of the Tuy An Tunnel Engineering Team, couldn't help but be moved when talking about his colleagues and fellow workers.
"What I remember most are the moments when we completed the 'tough' stages, overcoming the complex geological sections. At those times, the faces that had been tense would brighten up with familiar smiles, and then everyone would rejoice, shaking hands and exchanging greetings."
"At this construction site, if it's not scorching hot days, it's stormy and rainy days. There have been periods of heavy rain and storms that forced some work teams to halt. The guys in the tunnel and some other construction teams still clung to the mountain and the construction site, finding solutions to overcome the challenges and maintain the construction output. That's what it's like to overcome the sun and rain," Mr. Do said with a smile.
Understanding the sentiments of engineers and workers, an official from the XL01 contract management board of Deo Ca Group stated that, for the sake of road construction, many workers on the Chi Thanh - Van Phong expressway mega-project have "put aside" the joys of family life to work day and night alongside the contractor.
Understanding those sacrifices, the Deo Ca Group has always invested in spacious and comfortable living and working facilities. The health of its staff, engineers, and workers in general, and tunnel construction workers in particular, is prioritized with regular, in-depth medical check-ups and examinations.
"Having worked together for so long, everyone feels that the construction site and the camp are like a second home. It's where the work is, but there are also moments of peace. After dinner at the end of the shift, you can find glimpses of a father calling his child, a husband chatting with his wife, or a child calling to inquire about their parents' health at home."
"The care sent from the construction site, the love given back from 'the home front,' and the sharing from commanders and colleagues become a precious 'spiritual medicine' that makes the following workdays more enthusiastic and effective than the previous ones," the executive board leader shared.
Spacious camps and nutritious meals are the motivation for engineers and workers of Deo Ca Group to overcome difficulties at the project.
Progress is well ahead of schedule.
Regarding the project worth over 1.6 trillion VND on the Chi Thanh - Van Phong section of the expressway, a representative of Deo Ca Group stated that, with the determination and cooperation of the contractor and workers, as of mid-September 2024, the contractor's construction output reached over 950 billion VND, achieving 59% of the contract value and exceeding the plan by 6%.
The disbursed amount reached 785 billion VND, achieving 48%, exceeding the plan by 10%.
"Based on the actual implementation situation, it is expected that the excavation and reinforcement of the Tuy An tunnel will be completed in January 2025, followed by the construction of the cement concrete road surface and technical systems in May 2025; and the construction of traffic safety systems and lighting systems will be completed in August 2025."
"For the main route, the contractor is expected to start laying the first layer of asphalt concrete in November 2024, completing the asphalt concrete work in December 2024. Four bridges on the main route will also be completed in October 2024," a representative of Deo Ca Group said.
Despite efforts to meet deadlines, the contractor also stated that the construction site is currently facing several obstacles, such as: areas where land acquisition has been necessary due to design adjustments but the land clearance plan has not been approved and compensation has not been paid, leading to obstruction of construction by local residents; the geological conditions of the Tuy An tunnel differ from the initial technical design, requiring adjustments to the structural reinforcement methods, resulting in increased volume and costs…
