Ensuring electricity supply in the dry season

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - With a system of thermal and hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 2,400 MW, Thanh Hoa's electricity industry not only meets the electricity demand in the province but also plays an important role in supplying electricity to the national grid to serve inter-regional regulation needs. In the 2025 dry season, electricity production, transmission and distribution enterprises are proactively implementing many technical solutions, safely operating the system; strengthening coordination with localities and functional agencies to reasonably regulate water resources, optimize electricity production activities, contributing to ensuring national energy security.

In Nghi Son Economic Zone, two large thermal power plants, Nghi Son 1 and Nghi Son 2, are contributing a large amount of electricity to the system. Since the beginning of 2025, both plants have been operating stably, meeting the system's mobilization requirements.

At Nghi Son Thermal Power Company - the operator of Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Plant, it has proactively signed a coal supply contract with a volume meeting the 2025 operating plan; at the same time, it has coordinated with suppliers to control coal quality, optimize fuel efficiency, contributing to safe and efficient operation. According to the unit's representative, to proactively plan to ensure stable production and operation in the 2025 dry season, the company has proactively carried out repairs and prevented incidents during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, when the power system load is low. In addition, the company focuses on operational management, compiling and continuously updating all operating and repair procedures to ensure compliance with changes in technical features and control systems of the equipment; helping to improve the plant's operating efficiency and ensure stable equipment operation, minimizing the risk of incidents.

At Trung Son Hydropower Plant, in the face of the forecast harsh dry season in 2025, Trung Son Hydropower Company Limited has proactively developed and implemented many optimal operating solutions to ensure safe, continuous and efficient power supply. The unit has strengthened equipment inspection and maintenance, ensuring efficient operation of the generators and readiness to mobilize when necessary. In particular, meteorological and hydrological forecasting is continuously updated to regulate reservoirs in accordance with actual conditions, minimizing risks due to extreme weather.

Mr. Vu Xuan Dung, Director of Trung Son Hydropower Company Limited, said: “To ensure the parallel efficiency of power generation and water supply for downstream production, the company will continue to optimize water regulation and reservoir operation; ensure stable power supply for the national power system and provide enough water for the daily life and production needs of people in the downstream area in the dry season of 2025. Information related to water regulation will be promptly notified to authorities and the community for close coordination, avoiding water and electricity shortages.”

To ensure uninterrupted power supply to meet production and consumption needs, Thanh Hoa Electricity Company is also implementing a series of measures to cope with the increased load during the dry season. Inspection and maintenance of medium and low voltage grids are being stepped up; transformer stations are being cleaned and old and damaged equipment replaced to avoid overload and short circuits during prolonged hot weather. The Company is also promoting the application of technology in operational management, such as SCADA systems, telemetry, and grid automation, thereby reducing troubleshooting time and improving power supply reliability.

According to Mr. Hoang Hai, Director of Thanh Hoa Electricity Company: Along with promoting communication programs to promote electricity saving to people and businesses, Thanh Hoa Electricity is coordinating with localities and production facilities to develop plans for reasonable electricity use, shifting the operating hours of large production lines to reduce the load on the power system during peak hours.

Since the beginning of the year, the power supply situation in the province has been basically stable, meeting the production and business needs of enterprises and people's daily life. In the first quarter of 2025, the electricity output of factories reached 3.4 billion kWh. Commercial electricity reached 1.81 billion kWh, an increase of 7.8% over the same period. To ensure safe and stable electricity supply to serve socio-economic development and people's daily life in 2025; in March 2025, the Minister of Industry and Trade issued an official dispatch requesting investors of power plants to continue to urgently and proactively overcome technical incidents and defects of generators to ensure stable operation, comply with the dispatch orders of the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company Limited (NSMO) to meet the needs of the power system. The Ministry of Industry and Trade also requires factories to strengthen monitoring and closely supervise the operating status of factory equipment; proactively conduct periodic inspections, promptly detect and thoroughly fix defects, ensure adequate spare materials to improve reliability; strictly implement approved maintenance and repair plans, minimize prolonged adjustments and unplanned repairs during the dry season that affect power supply security.
