When will Hanoi announce the third exam subject?

Currently, some provinces and cities have announced the entrance exam subjects for grade 10 or have a clear view on choosing a third exam subject.

Third exam subject for grade 10 in 2025 in provinces and cities

Speaking to Dan Viet newspaper, a representative of the Vinh Phuc Department of Education and Training informed: "Currently, the Department has announced sample questions for the 10th grade entrance exam for students to refer to. Early next week, the Department will meet to discuss the 10th grade entrance exam plan and plans to try to announce it soon. The Department's point of view is to announce the plan so that students can avoid being impatient and have the best preparation time but also avoid the situation of lopsided learning."

Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training officially announced the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, Ho Chi Minh City students will take 3 exams including Math, Literature and English.

According to Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, this is an exam subject that is consistent with the will and aspirations of the Department's leaders as well as the majority of parents and students in the city. Specifically, Literature and Math have a test time of 120 minutes each; English has a test time of 90 minutes. The exam time is expected to be in early June 2025.

The Quang Nam Department of Education and Training also said that the third subject is expected to be English. According to the Department's representative, English is a suitable choice, helping to motivate and encourage students to study this subject more in the context of international integration and making English the second language in schools.

The two provinces of Tien Giang and Khanh Hoa also have similar plans. According to the leader of Khanh Hoa Department of Education and Training, Khanh Hoa's previous viewpoint is still to have an English test.

In Tien Giang, the Department of Education and Training believes that students need to be good at English to access documents and information during their studies. When entering the labor market, they need to use this language to work and communicate. Therefore, for many years, Tien Giang has maintained three subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam: Math, Literature, and English. It is expected that the third subject in the upcoming 10th grade entrance exam will be English.

When will the 10th grade entrance exam plan in Hanoi be announced?

For Hanoi students, they are still waiting for the Department of Education and Training to finalize the exam plan. According to the plan, the Departments of Education and Training will create a basis for the regulations on admission to junior high schools and high schools issued by the Ministry of Education and Training to develop the admission plan, submit it to the People's Committees of provinces and cities for approval, and then it can be widely announced. Thus, at the earliest, it will be the beginning of the second semester, that is, the end of January or the beginning of February 2025, before 9th grade students can know the admission plan for grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year.

In the meantime, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has requested schools to seriously implement the school year program, teach all subjects and educational activities, and absolutely not be subjective or teach lopsidedly. During the teaching and reviewing process, schools need to closely follow the requirements of the new program and the illustrative questions for the 10th grade entrance exam previously announced by the Department to prepare for the exam.

Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training has sent a document to the Departments of Education and Training regarding the selection and announcement of the third exam subject and guidance on admission criteria for junior high school and high school admissions.

Accordingly, the Ministry requested the Departments of Education and Training to promptly select and soon announce the third subject or exam for the 10th grade entrance exam according to regulations. This is to facilitate students in completing the program, reviewing, preparing well for the conditions, creating a mindset of readiness to take the exam and achieving good results.

Regarding junior high school enrollment, the Ministry requested the Department of Education and Training to promptly develop and publish principles and criteria for admission to grade 6 in accordance with local conditions so that students, parents, teachers and schools can clearly understand and be proactive in enrollment work.

For schools with the number of students registering for admission exceeding the assigned quota, the Department guides schools to conduct student capacity assessment in forms such as question-and-answer, writing, presentation, practice, experiment... Ensuring that enrollment is carried out fairly, publicly, transparently, and in accordance with practical conditions.

Previously, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Circular No. 30 on regulations for junior high school and high school admissions, which included many new points such as the regulation that junior high schools must consider admitting students to grade 6.

For grade 10 admission, the exam will include 3 subjects: Math, Literature and a third subject/exam selected by the Department of Education and Training.

The third subject is selected from the subjects assessed by scores in the general education program at the secondary level, ensuring that the same third subject is not selected for more than 3 consecutive years. The Departments of Education and Training will announce the third subject after the end of the first semester but no later than March 31 every year.
