Bee stings do not cause skin necrosis but can trigger anaphylactic shock - Photo: Provided by doctor
On May 4-5, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tien, deputy director of the Children's Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City, announced that they had successfully saved the life of a 3-year-old boy, LNPK (residing in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City), who was stung by a bee and suffered anaphylactic shock.
According to the medical history, two hours before admission, K. was playing indoors when several bees flew in. She was stung by one bee on her right thigh and stepped on another.
The family believes the bees that stung K. were flies because they saw them nesting in front of the house. After being stung, K. vomited, had red skin, swollen eyes, and pale lips.
The family then took the child to a local medical facility, and subsequently transferred her to the City Children's Hospital.
Upon admission, the child was lethargic, unconscious, cyanotic, breathing with labored respiration at 42 breaths/minute, weak pulse, cool extremities, blood pressure of 80/60 mmHg, and had bee stings on the thigh and between the toes of the right foot.
Doctors diagnosed baby K. with grade 3 anaphylaxis and respiratory failure due to a bee sting, 2 hours prior. The baby was given oxygen and treated according to the prescribed protocol.
The child's condition gradually improved; respiratory distress subsided, pulse and blood pressure stabilized, the child became alert, and facial swelling and skin redness disappeared.
The child will continue to be monitored in the hospital for at least 24 hours to detect early signs of delayed shock and complications involving damage to the liver, kidneys, brain, heart, and lungs.
Through this case, Dr. Minh Tien advises parents to pay attention to their children during the holiday season. Prevent children from climbing trees or picking fruit, as they may have accidents from falling or be attacked by bees due to accidentally or intentionally disturbing beehives. Parents should clear and control beehives around their homes and gardens.
When children go on picnics in the woods or orchards, it's important to avoid wearing brightly colored clothes or applying a lot of perfume, as this can easily attract bees.
