The Dak Bla River is one of the rare rivers in Vietnam that flows from east to west, instead of from west to east like most other rivers. This has earned the Dak Bla the nickname "the river that flows in reverse," making it a special symbol of the Kon Tum region.
Mr. A Jar, from Plei Don village, Quang Trung ward, Kon Tum city, shared: "Throughout many generations, people of various ethnic groups have joined hands to build up the culture and form villages along the banks of this river."
For generations, the Gia Rai and Ba Na people have settled along the banks of this river. The river deposits alluvial soil on the riverbanks, allowing rice and corn to grow lushly and providing abundant aquatic resources for the people here. For these ethnic minorities, the Dak Bla River is a special gift from nature.
Mr. A Toi (of the Ba Na ethnic group), village head of Kon Bok Deh village, Dak Ruong commune, Kon Ray district, shared: According to the elders, the first person to come here to find land and establish a village along the Dak Bla river was named Bok Deh. Seeing the fertile land, many people from the old village came to live here. The village gradually developed, and the lives of the villagers became increasingly prosperous. This was thanks to the fertile land bestowed by this river.
With a long history of settlement, the ethnic minority communities here have preserved the pristine features of their traditional villages. And it is from this that Kon Tum province has oriented and developed many villages along this river into community tourism villages, such as Kon Kơ Tu and Kon Jơ Ri villages in Đăk Rơ Wa commune.
Visiting these community-based tourism villages, in addition to experiencing the pristine beauty of the majestic Central Highlands, tourists can also enjoy rice wine, accompanied by the sounds of gongs and drums, and the traditional Xoang dances of the ethnic minorities. And in the early morning, visitors will be amazed by the sight of the Dak Bla River flowing like a shimmering silk ribbon, faintly visible through the ethereal mist. All of this combines to create a gentle and poetic beauty for the Dak Bla River.
A bustling riverside city.
As the political , economic, cultural, and social center of the province, Kon Tum City has focused on planning and construction in recent years towards becoming an ecological city, primarily by protecting and enhancing the natural beauty of the Dak Bla River to gradually form and develop the space along the Dak Bla River in conjunction with cultural and historical preservation, tourism development, urban transportation network development, and the development of ecologically balanced urban areas.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Man, Chairman of the People's Committee of Kon Tum City, said: The province is investing in the development of new urban areas to expand the urban space of Kon Tum City, focusing on the Dak Bla River as the central "backbone" to concentrate investment in infrastructure construction, create landscapes, and lay the groundwork for the development of trade, services, and tourism. The development of new urban areas will follow the model of green cities, smart cities, and have their own unique identity along both banks of the Dak Bla River.
The Dak Bla River is the source, the lifeblood of development, and also an integral part of the city's identity. Therefore, it is always associated with the name of Kon Tum in general, and Kon Tum City in particular.
The Dak Bla River is one of the rare rivers in Vietnam that flows east-west, instead of west-east like most other rivers. This has earned it the nickname "the river that flows in reverse," making it a unique symbol of the Kon Tum region.
In recent years, Kon Tum province has invested in building new, impressive, modern, and beautiful bridges across the Dak Bla River, adding a highlight and enhancing the river's inherent beauty. A riverside pedestrian street has also been created to boost the night-time economy, gradually forming destinations to serve the entertainment needs of residents and tourists.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, shared: "Coming here, I find the urban planning of Kon Tum City, which develops both sides of the Dak Bla River, to have a very beautiful landscape compared to other places. Walking along both banks of the river, you can see ancient villages, experience the traditional culture of ethnic minorities, and experience the unique 'village within the city' atmosphere."
A visit to Kon Tum, sitting with a cup of coffee by the Dak Bla River flowing through Kon Tum City, watching the water gently flow, feeling the soft breeze carrying the cool air of the river, and listening to the sounds of gongs and drums, will give you a deeper understanding of the history and culture of the land and people of Kon Tum.
