In 1930, the Buon Ma Thuot prison was built on a square plot of land measuring 2 hectares and 200 meters on each side, with high, thick walls and a system of barbed wire surrounding it. The prison was divided into 6 cells, each with the function of detaining prisoners of varying severity.

Within the prison grounds, the solitary confinement cells housed "special" prisoners, considered the most dangerous area. The row of cells consisted of 21 rooms, each 2.5 meters long and 1 meter wide. Each prisoner was confined to a separate cell with a sleeping platform, two bamboo tubes at the end of which served as leg shackles, and guards monitored them through a small window in the cell door.

On July 10, 1980, the prison was recognized as a national historical site by the Ministry of Culture and Information. In December 2018, the Prime Minister approved the classification of Buon Ma Thuot Prison as a special national historical site. Currently, Buon Ma Thuot Prison is open to the public as a "red address" serving the needs of locals and tourists for sightseeing and learning.
