Benfica played the second leg of the play-off at Real Madrid's home ground with many disadvantages. They were trailing 0-1 after the first leg, had to play at their home stadium Bernabeu, and suffered a major setback with the absence of manager Jose Mourinho (who received a red card in the first leg).
Despite facing numerous difficulties in the opening match, Benfica surprisingly took a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Rafa Silva in the 14th minute.
However, Real Madrid quickly regained control of the game and demonstrated their class by not allowing their opponents to spring any surprises.
In the 16th minute, midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni scored, equalizing the score at 1-1 for Real Madrid. This goal helped the Royal team regain their confidence and develop a solid game plan in the second half.

Real Madrid players had more possession, giving Benfica no chance to attack. The Real Madrid defense also made a few careless moments, creating opportunities for Benfica, but the Portuguese strikers were unable to capitalize on them.
In the 80th minute, from a superb long cross by captain Valverde, Brazilian striker Vinicius scored with a cool finish in a one-on-one situation with the opposing goalkeeper, putting an end to Benfica's hopes. Having conceded the second goal, Benfica almost gave up and accepted their fate.
In the end, Real Madrid defeated Benfica 2-1, thus securing their place in the next round with an aggregate score of 3-1.
Thus, the Spanish royal team successfully avenged their 2-4 defeat to Benfica in the final match of the classification round. This defeat cost Real Madrid their place in the top 8 and meant they had to play two more play-off matches.
