Doctors at Can Tho University Medical Center reported that they have recently successfully performed endoscopic surgery to treat many cases of patients who suddenly started crying.
Most recently, a 58-year-old female patient from Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy was admitted to the hospital with persistent tearing in her left eye (which had been present for a long time) accompanied by pus (much mistaken for eye discharge). Upon examination, doctors at the hospital noted a significant decrease in left eye vision to only 1/10, conjunctival congestion, but the eyeball remained intact.
When the doctor examines the lacrimal sac and presses on the area, a large amount of pus drains out of the lacrimal punctum. Notably, during the lacrimal duct irrigation test, purulent mucus is seen to backflow out of the upper and lower lacrimal punctum, instead of draining down into the nose and into the lower cleft as is normal in a healthy person.
The patient was diagnosed with complete blockage of the lacrimal duct. After consultation, the team decided to collaborate between ophthalmology and otolaryngology specialists to perform endoscopic surgery to create a new pathway between the lacrimal sac and the nasal cavity, helping the patient restore tear drainage function.
Following laparoscopic surgery, the patient recovered very quickly, symptoms significantly decreased, and no postoperative complications were recorded.
According to Dr. Nguyen Trieu Viet, Head of the Ophthalmology - Otolaryngology Department at Can Tho University Medical Center Hospital, the hospital's ophthalmology clinic has recently received a number of patients who frequently experience tearing, with some experiencing it in one or both eyes simultaneously.
This is entirely a medical condition, not a psychological problem, and it is completely curable. Recently, endoscopic surgery techniques have developed, making treatment safer and more aesthetically pleasing for patients.
Why do people get teary eyes?
There are many causes of this frequent tearing symptom, the most common of which is lacrimal duct obstruction. This condition can be congenital or due to other causes. In newborns, this often occurs when the lacrimal duct is not yet fully developed or there is a membrane that has not yet opened.
In adults, blocked tear ducts can be caused by the aging process narrowing the tear ducts, eye infections, or chronic sinusitis causing swelling and blockage. Certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus can also cause this condition.
In addition, exposure to chemicals, dirt, or side effects of certain medications can also cause inflammation and narrowing of the tear ducts…
According to Vietnamese doctors, endoscopic lacrimal duct anastomosis is an advanced treatment method that helps re-establish the tear drainage pathway by creating an opening from the lacrimal sac into the nasal cavity. Compared to traditional open surgery, endoscopic techniques have many advantages, ensuring aesthetics, minimal invasiveness, reduced pain, and faster recovery time.
