Ronaldo is in trouble in Saudi Arabia. |
According to the Telegraph , Cristiano Ronaldo has been sidelined for Al-Nassr's last two matches amid tensions surrounding the club's transfer ambitions. The tension is believed to have stemmed from a playful text message sent by Karim Benzema.
Ronaldo, who earns around £480,000 a day, is reportedly unhappy with Al-Nassr's cautious approach in the transfer market while their direct rivals strengthen their squads. This frustration is compounded by Al-Hilal, another team owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), signing Benzema from Al-Ittihad.
According to the Telegraph , Benzema jokingly messaged Ronaldo, saying he'd received a pay raise after moving to Al-Hilal, and expressing confidence in winning the Saudi Pro League again. This seemingly harmless message further angered Ronaldo, especially since Benzema had won the title the previous season with Al-Ittihad, while CR7's Al-Nassr finished third, 13 points behind the champions.
This season, Al-Hilal is one point ahead of Al-Nassr in the title race. Benzema even made his mark on his debut with a brace, further highlighting the contrast in ambitions between the clubs.
Meanwhile, Al-Nassr only added one young midfielder in the winter transfer window, which did not meet the expectations of Ronaldo, who has yet to win a major title since moving to Saudi Arabia in 2023.
Amid speculation, the Saudi Pro League issued a statement affirming that all clubs operate independently, making their own transfer strategies within the framework of shared finances, while emphasizing that no individual has the right to influence decisions outside the scope of the club.
Nevertheless, Ronaldo returned to training after Al-Nassr reportedly conceded to some demands, including resolving internal issues. The Portuguese superstar is likely to reappear when the league resumes, ending a rare period of tension since his arrival in the Saudi Pro League.
