Griezmann is highly likely to leave Atletico. |
According to The Athletic , Orlando City have opened negotiations to bring Antoine Griezmann away from Atletico Madrid before the MLS main transfer window closes on March 26.
The Florida team sees this as an opportunity to acquire one of the best players in the history of French football.
The negotiations reportedly lasted a long time. Sporting Director Ricardo Pereira made numerous trips to Spain to find common ground. At 34, Griezmann is no longer at the peak of his form, but he still plays a crucial role in coach Diego Simeone's system.
This season, Griezmann has scored 6 goals in La Liga. Atletico Madrid also came close to reaching the Copa del Rey final, showing that the striker's influence has not diminished at all.
Griezmann himself has long made no secret of his fondness for the United States and the MLS. In an interview with AS late last year, he candidly shared: "Everyone knows MLS is my dream and my goal." His frequent appearances at major sporting events in the US further solidify the possibility of a move across the Atlantic.
Inter Miami was once mentioned as a potential destination. However, the team was unable to proceed with the deal because they had already used all three designated player slots in their roster.
In terms of achievements, Griezmann boasts an impressive career. He scored 4 goals and provided 2 assists in France's World Cup 2018 victory. The striker finished third twice in the Ballon d'Or race, in 2016 and 2018. He was also included in the La Liga Team of the Season four times.
Griezmann is currently Atletico Madrid's all-time leading scorer and has 137 caps for the French national team. If the deal goes through, MLS will welcome another world-class star.
