More than four months after his last appearance, Ferland Mendy is still not back in action. |
The French defender, once hailed by coach Carlo Ancelotti as "the best defensive left-back in the world ," is now the third-choice left-back for Real Madrid – behind Alvaro Carreras and Fran Garcia.
In the summer of 2025, Real Madrid spent €50 million to bring in Carreras, despite Fran Garcia's impressive performance at the FIFA Club World Cup. This decision partly reflected the reality: Mendy was no longer a guarantee. Recurring injuries meant he only played just over 2,000 minutes the previous season, and even when he did play, his form was questionable.
The most disappointing moment came in last season's Copa del Rey final. Introduced to counter Lamine Yamal, Mendy only lasted 11 minutes before leaving the field due to a torn hamstring, requiring surgery on April 30th.
Initially, Mendy was expected to be out for 2-2.5 months, but now, more than four months later, he is still unable to train normally with his teammates. What is puzzling is that he participated in pre-season training and featured in the first three La Liga rounds before completely disappearing.
Real Madrid admitted they were willing to listen to transfer offers for Mendy this summer, but there were no bids. With Carreras a guaranteed starting spot and Fran Garcia ready to rotate, Mendy is gradually falling behind, watching the Bernabéu train slip away.
The future of the player who cost 48 million euros to bring in from Lyon is now an unknown. When will Mendy return – and will he still have a place in Madrid? That question, until now, remains unanswered.
