Griezmann's tragedy

After more than a decade with Atletico Madrid, striker Antoine Griezmann has yet to bring the team a La Liga or Copa del Rey title.

Griezmann came very close to winning the Copa del Rey this season but ultimately failed to do so.

In the early hours of April 19th, Atletico drew 2-2 with Real Sociedad after 120 minutes and lost 3-4 in the penalty shootout of the Copa del Rey final. This was a terrible scenario not only for the Madrid team but also for Griezmann.

Joining Atletico in 2014, Griezmann quickly became an irreplaceable mainstay under coach Diego Simeone. With his intelligent play, sharp finishing ability, and tireless fighting spirit, the French striker has made a significant contribution to helping the Spanish capital team reach new heights in European competitions.

However, despite coming very close to glory on numerous occasions, Griezmann and his teammates have consistently missed out on domestic titles. Except for the 2014 Spanish Super Cup, Griezmann has always been the loser in his attempts to compete for the La Liga and Copa del Rey championships.

Notably, the French striker was absent from Atletico's 2020/21 La Liga championship win because he was playing for Barcelona at the time.

Atletico, with Griezmann in the team, has always been a formidable force in La Liga. But despite a strong and promising start, fans have often witnessed the red-and-white team falter against the two giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Statistics show that Griezmann scored over 200 goals and provided numerous assists during his time at Atletico. However, those impressive numbers have not been able to fill the void left by domestic league titles, something the striker desperately craves.

After 10 years with the club, Griezmann will say goodbye to Atletico this summer to play in the United States. He will leave as a symbol of dedication, but will have to accept leaving his dream of winning a title unfulfilled.

Barcelona have every right to hold their heads high. A 2-1 victory against Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the 2025/26 Champions League quarter-finals on the morning of April 15th was not enough for Barcelona to advance.
