Peaceful ancient fishing village of Viet Hai

Viet Hai is a commune located in the Cat Ba archipelago, Cat Hai district, far from the center of Cat Ba town. Viet Hai commune has a total natural area of ​​6,485.08 hectares, bordered to the east by Quang Ninh province, to the northwest by Gia Luan commune, to the south by Cat Ba town, and to the southwest by Tran Chau commune (all belonging to Cat Hai district). Viet Hai commune currently has 87 households with 292 inhabitants.

Compared to many other fishing villages, Viet Hai fishing village is smaller in area. However, it boasts a very rich ecosystem including mountains, forests, and the sea. Because it is located deep within Cat Ba National Park, Viet Hai fishing village is also known by the nickname "island within an island".

According to locals, Viet Hai fishing village is called an ancient village because it has a history of over 100 years. Previously, when fishermen fishing in Lan Ha Bay encountered major storms, they sought refuge in the fishing village and unexpectedly discovered a source of fresh water. They settled there permanently, and from then on, the ancient Viet Hai fishing village gradually developed and took shape.

In Viet Hai fishing village, the natural scenery unfolds like a picturesque landscape painting. Here, you can still find houses with thatched roofs, walls built of earth or wood, wood-fired kitchens, and vast, sprawling meadows.

Mr. Vu Phi Hung, Secretary and Chairman of the People's Committee of Viet Hai commune, said: Located about 10km from the center of Cat Ba town, however, there is currently no road leading directly to Viet Hai fishing village. Therefore, tourists who want to enjoy the peaceful scenery of Viet Hai fishing village can travel by boat or ferry. On days when the sea is rough and boats cannot travel, tourists can travel by road through Cat Ba National Park. This road is about 12km long.

As a favorite destination for foreign tourists, the locals hope that the ancient fishing village of Viet Hai will receive more appropriate investment to develop and serve tourists in a more professional manner.
