OCop products: arrowroot powder and turmeric powder from Dong Dan.
Dong Dan tapioca starch and Dong Dan turmeric powder were displayed in a small corner of the booth at those events, but they attracted many delegates and customers who wanted to learn more about the products because they contain many trace elements that are beneficial to health, especially for the elderly.
Sharing his family's entrepreneurial story based on familiar agricultural products, Mr. Le Minh The said: When he got married, he and his wife used the land of their parents to grow crops such as black beans, peanuts, red turmeric, and arrowroot. At harvest time, only the legumes were sold locally, while fresh tubers like red turmeric and arrowroot, which had a high yield (1 ton/acre), were grown in distant fields, incurring high transportation costs, and therefore attracted little interest from traders, resulting in very low prices and minimal income. “At that time, I started thinking about processing arrowroot and turmeric, readily available family resources, into starch form. This would allow for longer preservation and a higher selling price, leading to greater profitability compared to selling fresh tubers at low prices,” Mr. The shared.
Without hesitation, Mr. The researched and learned about starch processing procedures, discussed with his family about investing in machinery and equipment to support the starch production process. As for raw materials, he utilized the readily available crops grown on his family's fields and purchased additional supplies from local people to ensure a year-round supply of tapioca starch.
After several trials, Mr. The's family produced a finished product: dried Dong Dan arrowroot powder, a fine, smooth powder. The powders are difficult to form into large clumps, and have a distinctive aroma of the starch-rich root, supporting daily nutrition. The product has been well-received and consumed by local people. Gradually, the carefully packaged, attractive product, along with guaranteed quality, has attracted more customers from near and far, both within and outside the province ( Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai). Mr. Tran Van Quy, from Hamlet 2, Bac Ruong commune, commented: “I often use Dong Dan arrowroot powder mixed with water to drink every morning, supporting nutrition for the elderly. According to medical science, arrowroot powder has a low calorie content, useful for people who want to lose weight.”
Besides, arrowroot powder is also used as an ingredient in dishes such as: sweet soups, baby food, and cakes (such as the traditional Tet cake)... After a short period of starting the business, the Dong Dan turmeric powder business, owned by Mr. The, with its two main products: Dong Dan arrowroot powder and Dong Dan turmeric powder, achieved OCOP 3-star product status; was recognized as a typical rural industrial product at the provincial level in 2022 and 2024; was recognized as a typical rural industrial product at the Southern region level in 2024; won third prize in the startup idea competition organized by the Binh Thuan (formerly) Provincial Youth Union in 2022; and won first prize in the startup idea competition organized by Tanh Linh (formerly) district, which has further motivated the family in this startup model.
According to Ms. Le Thi Tham (wife of Mr. Le Minh The), the family will continuously research and produce products for the market in a green, community-friendly direction, protecting consumer health and contributing to improving the quality of local resource products in Bac Ruong commune.
