According to AP, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry announced that the government has decided to reinstate visa requirements for tourists from the United States, Australia, Canada, and Japan starting October 1st.
The ministry's statement clarified that the Brazilian government is ready to negotiate visa-free agreements with all countries based on the principle of reciprocity.
In 2019, the Brazilian government under President Jair Bolsonaro lifted visa requirements for visitors from Australia, Canada, Japan, and the United States to encourage tourism to the South American country. However, to this day, all four countries continue to require visas for Brazilian citizens. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that former President Jair Bolsonaro's decision violated the country's foreign policy, which is based on the principles of reciprocity and equal treatment. In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, Brazil welcomed approximately 6.4 million international tourists.
