If consumed incorrectly, they can have adverse effects, impacting the digestive system and overall health.
According to recommendations from the Food Safety Department of the Ministry of Health , these are the fruits that should not be eaten on an empty stomach:
Bananas: Avoid eating them on an empty stomach because bananas are high in magnesium. Eating them on an empty stomach can cause a sudden increase in blood magnesium levels, leading to cardiovascular imbalance and affecting the digestive system. This can result in bloating, nausea, and irregular heartbeat in sensitive individuals.
Oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits (citrus fruits) : should not be eaten on an empty stomach because they contain a lot of citric acid, which can stimulate the stomach to produce more acid, causing heartburn, indigestion, and even stomach ulcers if consumed regularly.
Tomatoes : should not be eaten on an empty stomach because tomatoes contain a lot of pectin and tannin, which, when they come into contact with stomach acid, can easily precipitate, causing indigestion, stomach pain, and in more severe cases, can form stones in the stomach.
Custard apple (Annona squamosa) : Eating it on an empty stomach can cause bloating due to its high sugar content and tendency to ferment without other food, leading to gas and discomfort.
Experts recommend eating fruit only 30 minutes to 1 hour after breakfast. At this time, the stomach already contains food, allowing for better absorption of nutrients from the fruit without irritating the stomach lining.
Prioritize mild fruits like apples, pears, watermelon, papaya, and kiwi – those that are low in acid and easy to digest. Additionally, avoid eating too much fruit on an empty stomach, even if it's a healthy fruit; consuming excessive amounts on an empty stomach can lead to digestive problems.
Experts advise that while fruit is very nutritious, the timing of consumption is equally important. Avoid eating fruits that are high in acid, tannins, or sugar on an empty stomach to protect your stomach and prevent unwanted digestive problems.
