Vietnamese tuna has a wide open door in Chile

VnExpressVnExpress10/02/2024

High consumption demand and lower quality requirements in the US, Japan, EU, and Chile are opening the door to Vietnamese tuna.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Chile is one of the few tuna export markets of Vietnam that has maintained good growth in 2023. Vietnam's tuna export turnover to Chile reached nearly 16 million USD, up 87% last year. Chile is currently the 13th largest market out of 109 places importing Vietnamese tuna.

Among Vietnam's export products to Chile, processed and canned tuna group tended to increase sharply, at 192% compared to the previous year. Fresh, frozen and dried tuna products also increased but at a slower rate, about 46%.

According to VASEP, inflation in Chile is low compared to the general situation in many countries. In the second half of 2023, the country's consumer price index has been continuously decreasing. These are boosting consumption in Chile, including the demand for tuna.

Besides, the Chilean market does not have strict requirements on product quality like the US, Japan, and countries in the European Union (EU), creating great advantages for Vietnam's exports.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Chile Pham Truong Giang said that this country is a potential export market for Vietnamese consumer goods, because in recent years people's living standards have increased.

Chile is one of the first countries in Latin America to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Vietnam. Therefore, VASEP assesses that Vietnamese tuna enterprises have an advantage over other countries when enjoying tariff incentives under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans- Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
