How do other countries discipline students?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên13/11/2023

Amid escalating school violence, PBS reported in May that authorities in several US states are considering reinstating "zero tolerance" policies, meaning suspension and expulsion. Some teachers' unions support strong measures. Others argue that suspension and expulsion should only be a last resort for extremely serious violations, such as violent behavior that threatens a student's life.

However, according to a 2021 survey by the RAND Foundation, only 12% of 1,080 public school principals across the US believe that suspension and expulsion help students reflect on or learn from their misbehavior.

Countries around the world employ various positive disciplinary measures.

Although schools around the world employ various positive disciplinary measures, there are some commonalities in their implementation. Thanh Nien newspaper has compiled some examples of positive disciplinary measures:

  • Community service activities: The school collaborates with parents and local authorities to have students participate in community service activities.
  • Additional assignment: Students are assigned to write a self-assessment essay on topics such as emotional and behavioral control. They are encouraged to write about their feelings and thoughts, not in the form of a formal self-criticism.
  • Peer counseling: Some students are trained to become peer counselors and mediators to support students who violate school rules.
  • Emotional management training: Schools organize individual counseling sessions (peer counseling or teacher counseling) for students/groups of students who have misbehaved.
  • Behavior Commitment Form: Students sign a behavioral agreement with their teachers, listing behaviors they wish to emulate, such as refraining from insulting or threatening their peers. Students and teachers agree on the form of disciplinary action.
  • Self-improvement plan: Teachers guide students to create a plan for changing their behavior after instances of misconduct, outlining necessary activities to help them develop themselves, such as reading more books, participating in peer counseling, and seeking support from a mental health counselor.
