NATO's major powers oppose Ukraine's accession.

Foreign Policy reports that Ukraine and several countries that support its entry into NATO, such as Poland and the Baltic states, are pushing for Kyiv's admission to the alliance at the summit in Washington D.C. this coming July.

Accordingly, these countries argue that granting NATO membership to Ukraine is the only way to end the current conflict in Europe, and they claim that this move will be far more effective and cost-efficient in the long run than providing weapons aid.

However, according to the article, the US and Germany, the two countries that provide the most military aid to Ukraine, disagree with this view. US and German officials believe that now is not the right time to admit Kyiv, emphasizing that the West should focus on providing weapons to Ukraine.

Officials from both countries are concerned that admitting Ukraine into NATO risks triggering a full-scale conflict between the alliance and Russia.

According to Foreign Policy , the stalemate is further exacerbated by the stance of some European Union (EU) members, including Hungary and Slovakia, in opposing sending weapons to Ukraine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned that admitting Ukraine could draw NATO into the conflict. Slovak President Zuzana Caputovao also argued that such a move could spark World War III.

The Foreign Policy article stated that the US had urged EU members not to raise this issue at the summit.

Previously, Moscow had repeatedly warned the West against providing military aid to Ukraine, arguing that this would only prolong the conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin has asserted that Kyiv's push to join NATO is one of the main reasons for the current conflict.
