How do schools implement this?

Báo Đại Đoàn KếtBáo Đại Đoàn Kết17/03/2025

Following the Ministry of Education and Training's plan to convert the benchmark scores of all admission methods to a single scale, many universities have also released their proposed formulas for calculating admission scores for each method.

In 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training plans to require universities to convert scores so that the entrance exam scores and admission scores are equivalent to a common, unified scoring scale for each program, major, and group of majors.

This is a new feature compared to admission periods from 2024 onwards.

Ensuring fairness in conversion

According to our observations, many universities have already announced their 2025 admission plans, which include provisions for converting admission scores to a common scale.

At the University of Commerce, the admission scores for all methods are converted to a common scale. However, for the method of evaluating aptitude and thinking skills, the admission score is calculated using the following formula:

In this context: Ka and Kb are coefficients reflecting the difference in difficulty of the exam/differentiation of candidates' abilities and will be announced after the results of the 2025 high school graduation exam are available.

Speaking with a reporter from Dai Doan Ket Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Quang Trung, Deputy Head of the Communications and Admissions Department at the University of Commerce, said that the university has announced its 2025 admissions plan with a total quota of 5,320, an increase of 270 quotas compared to last year.

Regarding the formula for calculating admission scores for each method, Mr. Trung said that the school based its calculations on the cutoff scores of each admission method from 2022 to 2024 and compared the academic results of students admitted through these methods, finding similarities.

"Based on that data, the school calculated and developed a formula for the 2025 admission scores, ensuring fairness for all candidates," Mr. Trung affirmed.

Regarding information on the Ka and Kb coefficients for admission to candidates using the method of evaluating aptitude and thinking skills, Mr. Trung said: "The school will announce the exact values of these coefficients after the results of the data analysis from the testing units organizing the exams are available, and especially after the score distribution of the 2025 high school graduation exam."

From there, we compare and assign this coefficient to different score levels to ensure relative fairness between students applying based on high school graduation exam scores and those applying based on aptitude and thinking skills assessment scores.”

Dr. Luu Huu Duc, Head of the Management and Training Department at the Academy of Finance, believes that with this new regulation, each school will have its own method of converting admission scores to suit its target group of candidates. However, the conversion method needs to be public, transparent, and ensure fairness for all candidates applying to that school.

Regarding the Academy of Finance's admissions plan for 2025, Mr. Duc said that the academy will reduce the number of admission methods to create favorable conditions for candidates, while maintaining admission methods based on priority groups.

"For example, for internationally oriented programs, the Academy of Finance targets candidates with English language certificates more. Therefore, we still prioritize using international English language certificates to convert points and include them in the admission score," said Dr. Luu Huu Duc.

Candidates receive information on how scores will be converted before registering for admission.

In response to candidates' concerns about this new point, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education , Ministry of Education and Training, stated that this year, candidates can choose an unlimited number of admission preferences, but they must rank them in order of priority from highest to lowest.

The Ministry of Education and Training's general admissions support system will not differentiate between admission methods; the number of admission methods the system "scans" will depend on the total number of methods proposed by the training institution in its admissions plan.

Candidates do not need to register for admission by method; they only need to register for the major they wish to apply for and arrange their preferences in order of priority. Therefore, candidates should focus on researching and choosing to apply for a major they are truly passionate about and that suits their abilities, without worrying about the admission method.

Developing a method for converting scores is the responsibility of educational institutions and the Ministry of Education and Training to ensure the rights of candidates. Candidates will receive public information about the score conversion method before registering for admission.

According to Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son, the regulation to convert different admission methods to a single scoring scale stems from the current reality of having two different cutoff scores: one based on high school graduation exam scores and another cutoff score (based on academic transcripts or scores from aptitude/competency assessment exams).

Therefore, Mr. Son stated that converting or determining the equivalent scores of these two benchmarks is essential to ensure fairness for candidates with comparable abilities.

The Ministry of Education and Training is working with universities to develop guidelines to ensure uniformity while maintaining diversity and autonomy for each institution.
