The benefits of walking
According to VietNamNet, Dr. Nguyen Trong Hung, a physician in the Adult Nutrition Counseling Department at the National Institute of Nutrition ( Hanoi ), said that walking is a simple form of exercise suitable for all ages, from the elderly and young people to those recovering from illness.
Medical experts believe that sitting for too long and lack of exercise cause degeneration of the musculoskeletal system, affecting other organs as well, and contributing to overweight and obesity. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the habits that destroys your lifespan.
Walking for 30-60 minutes each day can have surprising effects, warding off dangerous diseases and benefiting organs from blood vessels and nerves to bones, joints, and the digestive system.
First, walking helps you sleep better. Lack of sleep makes you tired and less productive. Spending 30 minutes walking in the evening will reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and make it easier to fall asleep due to improved blood circulation.
Secondly, walking improves memory. Walking three times a week will enhance overall health, mental well-being, and reduce cognitive decline. For those over 40, daily walking improves blood circulation, prevents aging, and limits age-related diseases. Walking with others provides opportunities for social interaction and helps prevent fatigue.
Third, walking helps improve cardiovascular health. Walking is also one of the best exercises for the heart. Brisk walking increases heart rate, causing the heart to beat faster, helping the body transport oxygen and blood to the muscles more efficiently. This can also lower cholesterol.
Fourth, walking properly helps reduce stress. According to Health & Life magazine, pharmacist Ha Phuong stated that brisk walking helps relieve stress, balance stress hormones, and curb unnecessary cravings for sweets. A 15-minute walk can help reduce chocolate cravings and even decrease the amount of chocolate you eat in stressful situations. The less sweets you eat, the longer your lifespan will be, as obesity can shorten your lifespan by up to 14 years.
Fifth, proper walking helps boost immunity. Walking can also prevent seasonal infections. One study of 1,000 men and women found that those who walked regularly for at least 20 minutes a day, at least five days a week, had 43% fewer sick days compared to those who exercised once a week or less. Brisk walking can prolong these benefits.
Walking properly can help you live longer.
Walking properly can help you live longer.
According to VietNamNet, Dr. Nguyen Huy Hoang from the Vietnam-Russia Hyperbaric Oxygen Center, Ministry of National Defense , stated that brisk walking at a speed of approximately 4.8 km/h can help you live 10 to 15 years longer.
Recently, the Mayo Clinic published a study conducted over 7 years with 457,000 people, with an average age of 58.
Therefore, experts concluded that people who walk 100 steps per minute have a significantly longer lifespan. On average, women who walk quickly at about 5 km/h can live to 87 years old, while those who walk slowly have an average lifespan of only 72 years. For men, those who walk quickly have a lifespan of up to 86 years, while those who walk slowly have a lifespan of 65 years.
Therefore, Dr. Hoang suggests that when walking daily, you should try to maintain a fast pace to increase effectiveness and help prolong your lifespan.
