The family of Ms. Tran Thi Hoai Phuong (village 1, Quang Tho, Vu Quang commune) grows more than 1,500 orange trees, mainly lemon oranges, Xa Doai oranges, mandarin oranges, and pomelo oranges…

For about two weeks now, early-ripening citrus fruits have been harvested with high yields and a sweet, fragrant taste. Ms. Phuong has sold over 2 tons of oranges, supplying markets both within and outside the province.

More than 1,500 orange trees belonging to Ms. Phuong's family have begun to yield fruit.

Ms. Hoai Phuong shared: “My family carefully selects and harvests the first oranges of the season, choosing only the largest, evenly ripened fruits. On average, I harvest 5-7 quintals of oranges per day. Compared to last year, the area of trees in production has increased by about 30%, and thanks to the good harvest, the orange yield has doubled, estimated at around 50 tons.”

Currently, early-season oranges and lemons are priced between 40,000 and 45,000 VND/kg, while some selected varieties, judged by size and quality, can fetch prices between 60,000 and 70,000 VND/kg. This price increase is approximately 3,000 to 5,000 VND/kg compared to last year, bringing joy to many households and preparing them for the peak harvest season from now until the end of the year.

In the first two weeks of the harvest, Ms. Phuong sold more than 2 tons of oranges and lemons.

Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Hang, Head of the Economic Department of Vu Quang commune, said: “The entire commune currently has 692.67 hectares of orange orchards, of which more than 610 hectares are ready for harvest. Thanks to the farmers' experience in cultivation combined with the support and cooperation of the local authorities, oranges have become a key crop bringing high economic value to the area.”

According to initial assessments, this year's orange yield is estimated at over 95 quintals/hectare, with a total production of nearly 7,100 tons. At this time, some areas have already begun harvesting, but the peak season is from November of the lunar calendar until the Lunar New Year.

Many orange orchards yield high productivity and produce sweet, fragrant fruit.

Mai Hoa commune is also one of the localities with a large area of orange orchards, with about 530 hectares, of which about 490 hectares are for fruit production. Known for its sweet, refreshing, and fragrant oranges, the early-season oranges quickly win over customers, and the entire season is expected to bring a considerable income to farmers.

Mr. Tran Van Hoan (Yen Du village, Mai Hoa commune) said: “With 2 hectares of citrus trees grown according to VietGAP standards, my family has started selectively harvesting to sell on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, or according to orders. While last year's yield was over 23 tons, this year I expect to reach 25 tons. The current price of citrus fruits ranges from 45,000 to 50,000 VND/kg, which is relatively high; however, my family will keep about half of the yield to serve the Tet market.”

People in the mountainous communes of Ha Tinh province are packaging early-season citrus fruits (oranges and lemons) to sell in provinces and cities across the country.

Observations at fruit shops on central streets in Thanh Sen ward such as Xuan Dieu, Hai Thuong Lan Ong, Tran Phu, Ha Huy Tap... show that early-season oranges and lemons have already been put on the shelves. According to vendors, the early-season oranges don't yet have a deep yellow color, but the fruit is sweet and fragrant, so there is a considerable number of customers buying them for personal consumption and as gifts.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan, owner of Phuong Loan fruit store (Xuan Dieu Street), shared: “For about two weeks now, my store has started selling oranges and lemons from growing areas in Vu Quang, Mai Hoa, and Huong Khe communes… On average, I sell about 3-4 quintals per day, and on peak days it can reach 6-7 quintals. Besides retail sales, I also receive many wholesale orders and large orders for gifts. Currently, the price is fluctuating from 45,000 to 60,000 VND/kg depending on the type. Compared to last year, early-season oranges and lemons this year have a slightly higher price, and their sweet, refreshing quality is an advantage that helps them sell easily in the market.”

Early-season oranges are popular among locals when they hit the streets.

Currently, the majority of the orange orchards are primarily planted with early-ripening citrus varieties. Many households and small traders say that from now until the end of the year, other varieties such as cool oranges, Xa Doai oranges, and Thuong Loc crispy oranges will be harvested, contributing to a diverse and abundant orange market to meet customer demand.

According to statistics from the Ha Tinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (under the Department of Agriculture and Environment), the total area of orange cultivation in the province is over 7,400 hectares, of which 6,100 hectares are ready for harvest, concentrated mainly in communes such as Vu Quang, Can Loc, Mai Hoa, and Huong Khe. Currently, some orange orchards have officially begun harvesting, and the harvest will continue until the Lunar New Year. Farmers in the growing areas should monitor the ripeness of the fruit to choose the appropriate harvesting time, ensuring both fruit quality and a stable supply for the market.
