After 50 years of use, Rach Tom Bridge and Rach Doi Bridge on Le Van Luong Street (Nha Be District, Ho Chi Minh City) are seriously degraded.
Rach Tom Bridge and Rach Doi Bridge are two 50-year-old iron bridges located at the southern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City.
According to Dan Viet reporters, after a long time of use, these two bridges are showing signs of deterioration, causing traffic controllers to worry.
Rach Tom Bridge is now degraded but still regularly has to bear high traffic density, especially large trucks.
Rach Tom Bridge is narrow, just wide enough for a car and a motorbike to run side by side. The bridge surface is covered with iron plates, so every time a vehicle passes by, it shakes violently.
Rach Doi Bridge (connecting Nhon Duc commune, Nha Be district, Ho Chi Minh City with Long Hau commune, Long Hoa district, Long An) was also built before 1975 and is showing signs of deterioration.
Ms. Nguyen Ngoc (residing in District 7) shared: "Every time I cross this bridge, I have to look ahead and behind, especially when it's windy and rainy. The bridge has been in use for a long time so it has signs of deterioration. I'm very scared."
Many items on Rach Doi bridge have degraded and rusted but still have to bear high traffic density every day.
Regarding the construction of the new Rach Tom and Rach Doi bridges, in August 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport proposed that the City People's Committee include them in the priority investment plan from now until 2030. The total investment capital for these two bridges is about 1,300 billion VND, of which Rach Doi bridge is proposed to invest about 781 billion VND and Rach Tom bridge nearly 497 billion VND. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport proposed to allocate 260 billion VND for the Rach Tom bridge project in the 2024-2025 period to clear the site, then implement construction and complete the traffic by the end of 2026. For the Rach Doi bridge project through Ho Chi Minh City, the cost of site clearance is about 265 billion VND. The section through Long An province alone will cost about 85 billion VND and will be implemented by this locality.
