After 50 years of use, the Rach Tom Bridge and Rach Doi Bridge, located on Le Van Luong Street (Nha Be District, Ho Chi Minh City), are seriously deteriorating.

Rach Tom Bridge and Rach Doi Bridge are two 50-year-old iron bridges located at the southern gateway to Ho Chi Minh City.

According to observations by a reporter from Dan Viet newspaper, after a long period of use, these two bridges are showing signs of deterioration, causing concern among those using them.

The Rach Tom Bridge is currently in a state of disrepair but still frequently experiences high traffic density, especially with large trucks.

img

The Rach Tom Bridge is narrow, barely wide enough for one car and one motorbike to pass side-by-side. The bridge deck is made of iron plates, causing it to vibrate strongly whenever a vehicle crosses.

The Rach Doi Bridge (connecting Nhon Duc commune, Nha Be district, Ho Chi Minh City with Long Hau commune, Long Hoa district, Long An province) was also built before 1975 and is showing signs of deterioration.

Ms. Nguyen Ngoc (residing in District 7) shared: "Every time I cross this bridge, I have to look around cautiously, especially when it's raining or windy. The bridge has been in use for a long time, so it's already showing signs of deterioration. I'm very scared."

Many sections of the Rach Doi bridge have deteriorated and rusted, yet they still have to withstand a high volume of traffic every day.

Regarding the construction of the new Rach Tom and Rach Doi bridges, in August 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport proposed to the City People's Committee that these projects be included in the priority investment plan from now until 2030. The total investment for these two bridges is approximately 1,300 billion VND, with Rach Doi bridge proposed to receive about 781 billion VND and Rach Tom bridge nearly 497 billion VND. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport proposed allocating 260 billion VND to the Rach Tom bridge project in the 2024-2025 period for land clearance, followed by construction and completion for traffic by the end of 2026. For the Rach Doi bridge project section through Ho Chi Minh City, the land clearance cost is approximately 265 billion VND. The section through Long An province, costing approximately 85 billion VND, will be handled by that locality.
