Canada and Mexico have ordered retaliatory measures against the new U.S. tariffs after U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law the tariff measures targeting the two neighboring countries.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on February 1st that Canada will impose a 25% tariff on CAD 155 billion (USD 106.5 billion) worth of US goods in retaliation for new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. According to Reuters, the first 30 billion CAD of the tariffs will take effect on February 4th, and the remaining CAD 125 billion will take effect within 21 days.
Previously, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on goods from China, alleging their involvement in the fentanyl drug crisis and illegal immigration in the US. The new tariffs took effect on February 4th, and Canadian energy products were only subject to a 10% tariff.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a press conference in Ottawa on the evening of February 1st to announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States.
"As I've said many times, tariffs on Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially closing American auto assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities," Prime Minister Trudeau said, warning that gasoline and food prices would rise in the U.S. and impact consumers.
Prime Minister Trudeau urged Canadians to buy domestic products and travel within the country instead of going to the United States. He also said he was considering a number of non-tariff measures related to the trade of key minerals, energy, and other collaborations.
He criticized the US tariffs as violating the free trade agreement between the three North American countries and emphasized that if the US wants to enter a golden age, it would be better to cooperate rather than punish Canada. Earlier, Trudeau said he would meet with provincial leaders, the cabinet, and contact the President of Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote on social media on February 2nd that she had instructed the Minister of Economy to implement Plan B, which includes tariff and non-tariff measures to protect the country's interests.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held a press conference in Mexico City on January 21.
The White House claims that Mexican drug trafficking organizations have an unacceptable alliance with the Mexican government, according to CNN.
President Sheinbaum flatly rejected the accusation and denounced the U.S. as slanderous. "If there is such an alliance, it must be in the American gun shops that are selling powerful firearms to these criminal groups," Sheinbaum said.
The Mexican president suggested that the two neighboring countries should work together in a comprehensive way to combat criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking and violence.
China has not yet responded to the US action.
